Thanks Nachum!
The first fall champion since 2019 has been crowned, and it’s a familiar face in a familiar place. We’ll recap the Boys Varsity Hockey Championship and set the stage for the next week in the Yeshiva League, straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity Hockey has its 2022 champion, and it just so happens to be the same team that won its last championship back in 2019, the Frisch Cougars. The West 2nd seed Frisch Cougars dominated their rivals, the West top seed TABC Storm 5-3 in BPY on Sunday night. The Cougars were able to overcome three one-goal deficits and a hat trick by Storm senior AJ Seplowitz with a team effort, putting home three goals in the final 6:13 of the game for the 5-3 victory. Senior Sam Weinberger earned MVP honors scoring two goals that bookended the Cougar effort. Junior Jacob Feit added two goals of his own. Frisch has now appeared in the last 4 varsity championships played, winning in their last two of those appearances.
JV Hockey will look to do the same tonight when DRS and TABC square off in Frisch at 8PM. TABC downed HAFTR in their semifinal contest last Tuesday night by the score of 6-1 to earn their way into yet another championship game. The two teams faced off in the regular season, with TABC upending the Wildcats in Overtime 4-3. That game will be carried live on MYHSAL.com through a broadcast of the Yeshiva Sports Network sponsored by Yeshiva League Pass and Camp Dovid Hockey Camp.
Basketball will look to name its JV and Varsity champions this Sunday night.
The JV Championship will lead off the proceedings and will feature two teams who earned their way to the finals through upsets. The East #2 and #3 seeds Magen David and North Shore will square off at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the campus of Yeshiva University, after knocking off Frisch and Flatbush the respective West and East top seeds. The two teams split the regular season series and will rely on the championship as their “rubber-match”, to decide who will be the 2022 championson
That game will be followed by the Varsity championship, which will feature Ramaz, winner of their semifinal matchup over Frisch 62-45, last night, behind 24 from Senior Julius Rubenstein , and the winner of tonight night’s semifinal between TABC and SAR. The All-West semifinals came to pass last Tuesday night when Frisch upended East top seed DRS 56-55. The JV championship is slated for 6:30 with the varsity finals tipping off at around 9 PM. Like hockey, you can find the broadcast for both championship games by going to MYHSAL.COM and clicking on the link on the homepage.
