Nachum welcomed Elliot Weiselberg to this morning’s JM in the AM to deliver the Yeshiva League Sports (YLS) Update. Tune in for the latest Yeshiva League Spring Sports information, as well as, the occasional update on other sports happenings in the Jewish world. The transcript for this morning’s update is below.
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Frisch sees plenty of soccer action, and plenty of soccer gold and results from the 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High hockey tournament. All that and more straight ahead, good morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start off in soccer where Frisch has taken home 2 of the 3 championships that have already been decided. The Boys Varsity team capped off a perfect season with a 12-5 drubbing of SAR for what essentially is their 2nd consecutive championship, having won the last championship in 2019. Joining them are the JV Girls Cougars who doubled up Ma’ayanot 8-4 for their first championship since the 2016-17 season, where they also topped the Rapids in the finals. The JV Boys will square off with SAR tonight at JEC. Unfortunately for the Girls Varsity team, the chance for a Frisch sweep ended with a semifinal loss to SAR. The Sting would not be so fortunate in the championship, though, falling 12-5 to Kushner.
In Boys Volleyball, the SAR Sting advance to the finals after upsetting the top seed Ramaz Rams 3 sets to 1. The Rams shook off a dominant 21-9 Sting first set victory to win the second set 22-20, but the Sting would take the third in extras and seal the match off with a 21-13 4th set win. The Sting will advance to play North Shore in the finals. SAR, the 4th seed swept the regular season meeting between the two 3 sets to none.
Outdoors, the Boys JV Softball championship is set, as YDE will square off with Hillel for the title. Hillel defeated Heichel Hatorah 3-2 while YDE upended Darchai 11-1 in the semifinals to advance.
Finally, congratulations to the Moriah Mountaineers, the 2022 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Hockey Tournament champions. Moriah went undefeated through Har Torah and HANC in round-robin action, rival Yavneh in the semifinals and in a rematch of the 2022 YMSSA championship, shut out Ramaz 3-0 to take home the school’s 4th tournament title. Tournament MVP honors went to Moriah goalie Jared Helwani, winner of all 4 games, yielding only 1 goal on the day. Helwani had himself a day in other parts of the event as well, walking away with two of the prizes from the renowned memorabilia raffle held. On the whole, the tournament, played in HAFTR, on Sunday was successful in all of its goals, raising over $11,000 for Hatzolah. You can still donate and watch replays of all of the action on the tournament website at www.mwtournament.com. Winners of the All-tournament team awards and the vaunted Contributor’s Cup challenge will be announced later this week.
