Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, TABC Varsity Hockey takes Round one of the “Route 4 Rivalry,” and Flatbush varsity basketball takes the Emunah Rubenstien basketball tournament. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
It’s always a fun time for North Jersey when Frisch and TABC get together, and it’s even more special when it’s a Motzai Shabbos matinee. Saturday night saw the first time that the two schools would meet in any sport this season and the intensity lived up to the billing in this Varsity Hockey showdown. In a penalty filled battle, the home-team TABC would walk away victorious 5-2 to remain undefeated, 5-0, on the year. Shua Naor scored twice, Daniel Levy, Yair Knoller and Sam Eisenstadter each added one in the Storm win. Bryan Alter and Sammy Wietschner tallied goals in the Frisch loss. TABC is now one of only two undefeated teams remaining in the Varsity hockey league. The other, HAFTR, remained undefeated, knocking off Flatbush 4-2 last week to improve to 6-0.
In JV hockey, the defending champions continue to slide. SAR is now winless in their last 4 games, having lost to Frisch and only managing a tie against TABC coming into this past week. Last Wednesday, the Sting lost 5-0 to DRS, Jakey Friedman compiling the shutout victory for the Wildcats, and last night, the Sting fell to JEC 6-2, dropping SAR to 1-3-1 on the season.
In varsity basketball, last week marked the second annual Emunah/Rubenstein Varsity basketball tournament. In the semifinals, Flatbush and TABC emerged victorious with a championship meetup at SAR on Sunday evening. The Storm would hold a 12 point lead early, but the Falcons would reverse course in the second half outscoring TABC by 17 to capture the tournament trophy 54-47. Kevin Haddad led all scorers with 28 points on the afternoon, earning Tournament MVP honors for Flatbush. Also on the week, HAFTR upends Frisch by 1, 57-56 and Sam Reich’s 14 points give Ramaz their first win of the season, dropping Kushner, 62-38.
In JV basketball, HAFTR and SAR pick up wins to stay in a pack of 5 undefeated teams left in the JV Basketball league. The Hawks picked up a 44-38 victory over North Shore while SAR pounced on Hillel 71-34.
