Up ahead, a bittersweet JM in the AM Sports Update. Our final two champions are crowned as the Basketball championships take place in the Mac Stern Athletic Center and we shine the spotlight on this year’s winners.
Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We kick off with the JV Basketball finals on Sunday as the Frisch Cougars and North Shore Stars squared off. North Shore jumped out of the gate strong amassing a 21-8 halftime lead, due for the most part to North Shore sophomore, Cody Cohen, who piled in 12 before being forced to exit the game with an injury. But the Cougars would not stay down. Capitalizing on North Shore’s loss, Frisch Sophomores Zack Schreir, Andrew Levine, Andrew Langer and Freshman Noah Shechter took over, holding the Stars to 0 field goals in the third, outscoring them 14-1 and taking a tie game into the final quarter of play. In the 4th it was all Frisch, jumping out to a 33-28 lead and running out the game from the line. As a team, the Cougars shot 22-26 from the line, including a perfect 10-10 by Schecter, 8-8 in the closing minutes. Frisch completes their perfect season by bringing home a 43-30 championship victory. MVP honors went to Schrier who finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals. North Shore’s Cohen led the game with 12, all during the Stars’ big first half. Congratulations to Frisch coach Avi Borenstein on the victory.
We move on to the marquee matchup of the day as the #5 seed Ramaz Rams took on the #6 DRS Wildcats for the MYHSBL Varsity championship. The first quarter belonged to DRS senior forward Adam Scharaga, who drained three 3-pointers to push the Wildcats out to a 15-6 lead. DRS would continue their control of the game in the second quarter doubling up Ramaz at the half 26-13. But with DRS leading 33-20 in the closing seconds of the 3rd, and into the 4th, Ramaz clawed their way back on the shooting of Jamie Capell. Cappell hit several key 3-pointers to help draw the Rams back to a 5-point game, 38-33, but that would be as close as they would get. Seniors Yoel Schreier and Mitch Blitman would push the lead back out to 12 and the DRS free-throw shooting would balloon the final gap to 21 as the Wildcats earn their first basketball championship, 62-41. Schreier earned MVP honors for the game. Mazal tov to DRS coach Jared Solomon who earns the victory in his final game coaching for the Wildcats. On behalf of the coaching community, we wish you the best of luck in all of your future endeavors.
With that, the vast majority of the Fall sports have reached their conclusion. The only fall league still unsettled is the HAYMISH junior High Hockey League. Currently, Moriah awaits the winner of the JEC-Kushner semifinal game that will take place after the Pesach holiday.

As the season draws to a close, we would like to thank everyone involved. A hearty yasher koach to the commissioners, Seth Gordon, Eric Gellman, Jamie Lassner and David Wyszkowski, as well as Richie Hagler and Rabbi Arthur Poleyeff for their tireless dedication to the running of the MYHSAL. Additionally to all of the referees and coaches, and especially to you, the players and fans of all of our leagues. Without you, there is no us and no reason to do what we do. Lastly, a huge thank you to Nachum for allowing me the opportunity to step in and bring these reports to you every week. I would also be remiss if I didn’t give a shout out to my partner in crime, Isaac Benishai, whom you heard from yesterday on this radio program. Isaac cultivated this program and I’m honored to carry on the tradition.
One final note before we go, the date for the 2013 Martin Weiselberg Junior High Charity Hockey Tournament has been announced. It will take place in Yeshiva Har Torah on Sunday May 19th. Invited teams will be notified, today, of their inclusion. I look forward to talking more with you, Nachum, about this as we get closer to the date.
To all of our loyal fans and dedicated listeners, thank you for tuning in here each and every week. It has been an amazing year, and I am humbled to be able to have brought the Yeshiva Sports World to you each and every time. So, for the final time this year, this has been the JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
