Straight ahead on this edition of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a comeback sort of night in varsity hockey, TABC pulls into the driver’s seat in JV hockey, and a light but impactful week on the hardwood. All that and more, coming right up. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in varsity hockey where some major developments have arisen within the past 48 hours, including a blockbuster night last night with two amazing come from behind finishes at the top of both divisions. Out West, the SAR Sting overcame a 3-0 deficit to league-leading TABC, to knock the Storm from the ranks of the undefeated 4-3. SAR improves to 7-2-1 and now sits 2 points behind Frisch in the race for the 2nd bye seed. TABC had hoped to clinch the division with a win but will now need to wait until the other side of winter break if they are to do so without any help. Meanwhile across the river, HAFTR took a 2-0 lead deep into 3rd, but division leading DRS would power through with 3 goals in the last 6 minutes of the contest to avoid an upset to their 5-towns rivals. Micha Kahn put home the game-winner with a 3-quarter court shot to improve DRS to 12-1 with the top spot in the East already locked up. HAFTR will need to take the positives from the night into the break and attempt to earn a first round bye against Frisch and HANC to round out their schedule. In other action, YDE locked up the last playoff berth in the East with a 6-5 win over Ohr Yisroel, and Kushner, MTA and Ramaz all took wins on the week wrapping up the final spots out West.
Moving over to JV Hockey, where the situation is a better one for TABC. The Storm have new life following last night’s 2-0 win over SAR. The win puts the 4th playoff spot in control of the Storm as they sit two points behind HAFTR with one game left in early February against winless Rambam and the tiebreak in their favor. SAR almost ended the race, as they defeated YDE Thursday night, dashing the Thunder’s playoff hopes, but could not withstand the Storm who now sit at 4-4-1 after starting the season with only 1 win their first 5 contests.
A bit of a light week in Varsity Basketball as only 4 contests were played. Thursday saw two Eastern division contests as DRS downed Rambam 65-52 and Waterbury upended YDE 76-63. The results keep the last two seeds in the East from being wrapped up as YDE sits at 6-5, Rambam at 5-7, HAFTR at 5-8, HANC at 4-8 and Waterbury at 4-9. YDE is the only one that controls their own fate and can clinch a berth Thursday night when they square off with Heschel. The Heat were part of last night’s two Western Conference contest affair where they fell to MTA 42-32 while Ramaz dominated Ohr Yisroel. MTA improved to 10-1 deadlocked with TABC at the top of the West, putting the pressure on SAR to match them in the race for the two West bye seeds. SAR is 7-1, will play JEC tonight and will have two games next week where they can either make February really interesting or really boring at the top of the West. The same holds true for Ramaz who, with 4 games over the next 10 days can either join the pack at the top of the West or fall into a must-win race for one of the final playoff spots in February.
Finally, in JV Basketball, TABC turned the tables on Frisch, defeating the Cougars 61-36 to drop both teams into a tie at 7-2. Four teams now sit at 2 losses, as JEC is 6-2 and Ramaz is 5-2. Lurking behind them all is SAR at 4-3, just waiting for a few teams to fall in the last few weeks of the season. JEC and Ramaz will square off Thursday night and SAR will meet up with Ramaz on Monday, so at least one of those teams will be able to make headway toward the two Bergen County teams. Out East, Magen David and HANC each improved to 6-2. Magen David will square off with North Shore tomorrow night in an attempt to pull even with DRS in the race for the 2nd bye spot in the division.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
