Thanks Nachum!
Welcome back from Yeshiva break folks. February is only a few days away, which means that the playoffs are right around the corner! Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we reset all leagues as we gear up for a whirlwind week to wrap up the Winter Sport Regular Seasons! Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
We’ll start out by running down Varsity Hockey. Two results last night help bring a little more intrigue at the top of both divisions. In the East HANC’s win over Solomon Schechter brings it to 11 wins, tied with DRS at the top. DRS will take on 4th place Rambam and 3rd place HAFTR this week, while HANC faces North Shore. All 4 teams have wrapped up playoff spots, with Magen David holding the edge for the final spot, but Flatbush and YDE can both find themselves in the hunt with sweeps and a little help from each other. Out West, TABC leads at 10-2, but will face a challenge Thursday as they play Kushner, winners of last night’s contest with SAR to jump into 2nd at 9-4, a win over 3rd place Frisch. With a win over TABC or a Frisch loss this week, Kushner will clinch the 2. Frisch will take on MTA and SAR both of whom are 7-6 and fighting for the 4th spot in the division. An MTA win or an SAR loss will give MTA the higher seed. Entering the final week, 11 games have playoff implications beginning with tomorrow night’s games in Flatbush, DRS and HANC.
In JV, SAR and DRS have locked up the 1 and 2, respectively. HAFTR and Frisch have clinched berths as well. HAFTR can clinch the 3 and escape the play-in with a win or tie against DRS tomorrow night, otherwise Frisch can jump over the Hawks with a win over YDE or SAR. Should YDE lose to Frisch, the MTA- Ramaz game means that the winner will advance to the playoffs, but a tie means that neither will and YDE would have taken the 5th spot.
In Varsity Basketball, both divisions still up for grabs as Flatbush leads the East at 12-2, but Magen David only needs 1 win to take the division. Both have locked up byes. HAFTR and DRS have clinched berths and have the inside track at the 3 and 4. North Shore, YDE and Waterbury will fight for the final 2 berths with North Shore only needing a win to have a shot to run back last year’s championship. Out West, Ramaz and TABC will play a home and home, where a sweep means the division to either side. A split could open the door for Frisch to swoop in and overtake both and even result in needing tiebreakers to decide the West #1. Heschel clinched a spot with a 2 point win over SAR last week and now leaves Ohr Yisroel, SAR and JEC each fighting for the last 2 spots, all 3 at 6 losses.
In JV Basketball, 11 of the 12 playoff spots have been clinched. DRS has won the East and will join HAFTR, Flatbush, North Shore, Magen David and YDE in the postseason. Out West, SAR and Frisch can still go to a coin toss to determine the division, meanwhile Hillel hopes SAR falters or it will take the 3 spot. TABC and Ramaz are fighting for the 4 and the 5, but the 6th will come down to JEC and MTA. MTA is currently at 3-7 with JEC at 3-5. JEC needs one win in its last 2 games against SAR and Heschel, otherwise MTA will take the spot due to the tiebreak.
With the last games in all leagues occurring next Tuesday, and the possibility of certain spots still hanging in the balance, the JM in the AM Sports Update will allow for all proceedings to play out and will instead come to you next WEDNESDAY with the full playoff picture to discuss.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
