Thanks Nachum,
Welcome back everyone! After 7 long months of waiting, the curtain has finally lifted on the 2015-2016 Yeshiva League Sports season. All basketball and hockey leagues kicked off over the past week and some serious matchups happening right out of the opening draw. We have your first look at the 2015-2016 season straight ahead as we kick off season 10 of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update. I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The Varsity Basketball league saw two of its powerhouses square off last week as Flatbush and DRS met up to tip-off the Yeshiva League Season. These two teams, as you may recall, met up as freshmen and sophomores two years ago in the JV Championship game with DRS comfortably trouncing the Falcons by 18. Two years later, Flatbush still has not forgotten and looked to start off the season with a statement game. Right out of the gate, the Falcons took control, going on a 10-0 run behind Junior Abie Rosow to open up a 13-6 lead after 1. Flatbush would extend the lead as the first half went on taking a 10 point lead into the locker room. In the 2nd half though, the Wildcats showed the resiliency that brought them to the finals last year, chipping away at Flatbush’s lead and with a few minutes to go in the quarter, tied the game up at 28-28 on a 13-3 run and, in the opening seconds of the 4th would take a 32-31 lead. The teams would fight back and forth but DRS had clearly picked up the momentum thanks to big man Judah Levine and Gabriel Leifer who led the game with 19 points, and with a minute to go, DRS had a 40-36 lead. Two Rosow free throws would cut the lead to 2, and a missed foul shot on a 1 and 1 on DRS’s end meant that Flatbush would have the ball with the chance to tie or take the lead, but the Falcons would turn the ball over on a traveling violation, and two free throws by Jeremy Brody would ice the game for DRS, giving the Wildcats a come-from-behind 42-38 opening season victory.
In the only other varsity game on the week, JEC outgunned Ramaz in a high scoring- affair, winning 76-62. However, in the only JV game of the season thus far, it was the Rams taking the victory over the Thunder 49-45.
In Hockey, five varsity games were played, but the season kicked off with a clash of two old-time Yeshiva League teams, TABC and Ramaz. The Storm, among the favorites to win the Varsity hockey championship this season, opened up the scoring mid-way through the first on a laser by senior defenseman Shua Naor. Ramaz would tie up the game on the powerplay in the second period, but the Storm would answer back, with Daniel Levy and linemate Yair Knoller scoring two goals in 30 seconds for a 3-1 lead. Ramaz would answer back on a Jared Feingold marker in the third for their second powerplay score of the night, but Levy and Knoller would each notch another goal en route to a 5-3 TABC victory. Tomorrow night, hockey will have its clash of the titans as TABC will host DRS in a rematch of last year’s semifinal upset.
Also on the week, SAR blanked MTA 6-0 behind 4 goals by Junior Solomon Freilich and Junior Sam Laniado scored two to pace Flatbush over HANC.
JV, Josh Blitstein hit the net 4 times to lead HANC over Rambam 6-2.
