Thanks Nachum!
What a game we had this past Sunday, didn’t we folks? One of the most epic and improbable comebacks in the history of sports, a trend that seems to be on full display this year. What if I told you that it wasn’t the only amazing comeback on the week? Straight ahead on your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, HANC and Kushner square off in one of the most ridiculous varsity hockey games in recent memory, TABC and Frisch go down to the wire in varsity basketball and SAR JV Hockey keeps itself alive, at least for the time being. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Had enough of comebacks for one week? You may not want to hear about this one. The Kushner Cobras and the HANC Hurricanes met up in an inter-conference varsity battle in Kushner this past week. Kushner needing a win to put itself a step closer to playoff contention seemed well on their way, busting open a 5-1 lead midway through the second period. But, in a case of no lead is ever too safe, the Hurricanes crawled their way back into the contest on the back of four- 3rd period goals, including the game winner by Junior Jacob Schwartzman in the final minute to upend the Cobras 6-5. As a result, Kushner drops under .500 and will need to defeat either Frisch or TABC and have MTA lose out to make the post-season. HANC keeps its hopes at a First-Round Bye alive in the East, but needs some very interesting results in the remaining games to get there. Also on the week, TABC defeated JEC 4-1, DRS downed HAFTR 3-0 and Frisch took two to bring them one step closer to locking up the varsity West.
In JV Hockey, SAR stayed alive in the playoff race with a 7-2 win on the back of a hat-trick by Freshman Alex Levy. The win gives SAR 10 points, but with a record of 4-4-1-1 it leaves itself vulnerable to being jumped by MTA and/or JEC, both of whom could also reach 10 points, but with an all-important 5th win, which serves as the first tiebreak. Should MTA lose to Kushner, who was eliminated by the aforementioned result, despite an impressive 6-5 OT win over HANC and JEC lose to Frisch, SAR will earn the 4th and final Western Conference Playoff berth.
It’s always good to see a rivalry get some of its luster back and this past week, the Route-4 Rivalry did just that with Frisch taking on TABC, with a First-Round Bye still at large for one of these teams. Typically, the last few years have seen the Storm jump out with an up-tempo game and a big lead only to see Frisch chip away and out-muscle their way to a victory. This game was quite the opposite. The Cougars opened up an 18-point halftime lead and watched as the Storm whittled it down to a 53-53 tie with only a few ticks left on the clock. Frisch would take the ball and look to hold for one, but an errant pass found its way to TABC’s Efraim Saks who would dribble the length of the court and hit a running buzzer beater to give TABC the 55-53 victory. The win puts them a game behind Frisch and SAR for the 2nd seed in the West, ensuring that the next few days of games with Heschel, Frisch and TABC will be nothing short of epic.
Not to be outdone, the JV Storm stepped to the plate and showed that the rivalry may find itself turning in the direction of Teaneck. TABC defeated Frisch 39-29 to knock the Cougars from the ranks of the undefeated and effectively handing TABC the Western Conference top spot in the process. Both teams will enjoy a first-round bye, but the road to the JV Basketball championship will run through TABC.
