Thanks Nachum!
As we all migrate North following the Pesach holiday, the realization that there are only seven short weeks left to the school year begins to hit home. Similarly, the calendar turning to the month of May signals the home-stretch to the Spring season for the MYHSAL. Today, we’ll take you through the active leagues and update you on the current playoff situations. All that and more, straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Girls Hockey gained a bit more clarity last night after Maayanot blanked Ramaz 7-0. The loss drops Ramaz into a last place tie in the West with Westchester and assures us that the 4 playoff teams from the division will be Heschel, who has earned a first-round home game, Kushner, Maayanot and Frisch. In the East, 3 of the 4 teams have been determined. HAFTR and SAR will battle next week for the division title but have both clinched berths, as has Central. The last remaining spot will either go to North Shore, presently at 6 points or HANC at 3. North Shore can slam the door with a win tonight over the Hurricanes. A Hurricane win and a win over Central in their final contest would give the final berth to HANC.
Moving over to soccer, in Boys Varsity, where the defending champs are in danger of not even getting a chance to defend the crown. The league will have 8 playoff teams, comprised of the top 2 teams in each of the 3 divisions and the next 2 best records as wildcards. Currently, 7 of the 8 teams have been determined. HANC and Kushner have clinched the East and West titles. The Central is still up for grabs, but we do know that both SAR and MTA will make the postseason. In the East, the 2nd seed will either be DRS or North Shore, however, with both teams at 10 points, whomever winds up in 3rd will be one of the wildcard teams, along with Ramaz from the Central. This leaves only the 2nd spot from the West open as TABC and Frisch battle it out. Currently, last year’s champs, TABC, has 8 points and Frisch is at 7. Only one of these two teams is likely to reach double-digits meaning that the third place team will be left out of the postseason. The spot will essentially be decided this coming Monday night when the two face in what will be the season finale for both teams. Frisch faces JEC this Thursday night in the meantime.
Boys JV will have a 6-team playoff with the top-2 teams in each divisions earning berths. TABC and SAR have clinched in the West, Flatbush and Magen David from the Central have as well. DRS has won the East with the only spot left being the second seed, currently in a deadlock between Rambam and North Shore, both with 4 points, Rambam with 2 games left and North Shore with 1. The Ravens will face Magen David tonight and DRS next week, while North Shore will match up with Kushner tomorrow night. The Cobras, the defending champions have been eliminated following a disappointing 1-4-1 season. Rambam and North Shore saw both of their games with each other end in 1-1 ties.
In Girls Varsity soccer, the 8 teams, the top 3 from the 2 divisions and the next best 2 wildcard teams, have all been determined. SAR, Maayanot and either Kushner or Hillel will be the 3 automatics from the West, while Central, North Shore and Ramaz have advanced from the East. Whichever of Kushner or Hillel that does not finish wit an automatic will still advance as a Wildcard entry, along with HAFTR from the East as they cannot be reached by any other team. Kushner and Ilan will play tonight and the Cobras only need a point in the standings to up their position.
In Girls JV where the top 4 of 6 teams make it, SAR and Frisch have clinched berths. Central will clinch a berth if tomorrow night’s Flatbush-Maayanot game does not go to overtime. Otherwise, both of those 2 teams will still have a shot at the last 2 spots.
