Nachum Segal has been the host of JM in the AM, Jewish Moments in the Morning, since September 1983. A graduate of Yeshiva College, Nachum began his radio career at Yeshiva University’s on-campus radio station, WYUR, in 1981. During his senior year, Nachum was to assume leadership of Jewish programming at WFMU Radio (91.1FM) quickly propelling Nachum and his career to a path of success and prominence in the broadcast and Jewish community.
Nachum’s career at WFMU began on Erev Rosh Hashanah 1983 and immediately incorporated much of his successful college radio style into the morning program, named JM in the AM. Since then the show has grown to a point of overwhelming popularity around the world. Interviews with government officials, community leaders, authors and newsmakers are featured on a regular basis. For three decades, listeners and fans have shared personal anecdotes and moving stories demonstrating the impact Nachum and his program have had on their lives. Nachum’s seamless presentation of music, news and community events accompanies tens of thousands of listeners through their morning routine, and many comment how they begin their day with the playing of Regesh’s “Modeh Ani,” the program’s intro for almost 30 years. Today JM in the AM has listeners in every corner of the world and Nachum Segal is a household name in the international Jewish community.
JM in the AM has been a constant of Jewish life in the NY metropolitan area for a generation. Often referred to as the “Voice of Klal Yisrael,” Nachum’s warmth, sincerity and overall gentle personality have helped him develop a loyal following and an enthusiastic audience. Nachum’s passion for important causes and his longevity has propelled JM in the AM to be regarded as the radio program of record in the Jewish world. Nachum’s interviews regarding current events are considered must listen radio for many in the community. He is widely known as one of the few in radio to analyze and probe issues from the perspective of the Jewish world. As a result, influential members of the political world – from Ambassadors to Senators to Chevrei Knesset – have sought time on the air and joined Nachum in the studio.
Often the first to step-up and help in moments of crisis, Nachum has been at the forefront of numerous Jewish causes and continues to be an inspiration for Jewish activism. During the recent Operation Pillar of Defense in Israel and the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy on the East coast, Nachum again demonstrated his leadership and passion by highlighting conversations with key people, analysts and organizations. In addition, he directed his audience how to help others in need, provided chizuk to his listeners and visited the devastated areas as a sign of solidarity and commitment.
Because of his worldwide appeal, Nachum has served as Master of Ceremonies for major New York area concerts in prominent venues and makes celebrity appearances at numerous well-known events. He has hosted radio shows in Israel and in many parts of the USA. In celebration of his 30th year on the air he is planning an international radio tour – the “30in30@30”- with broadcasts worldwide.
After years of simulcasting JM in the AM on WFMU and on the web stream, Nachum ambitiously launched The Nachum Segal Network in September 2012. Determined to provide quality original programming to his international audience in the same format as his successful morning radio program, the network combines Jewish music and talk that is entertaining, innovative and informative. A first for the Jewish world, The Nachum Segal Network has been warmly received by listeners across the world. From Israeli politics to family values to issues facing today’s teens, the Network’s programming reaches all and meets the needs of listeners everywhere.
