Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM sports Update: TABC varsity basketball stays perfect in their new home court, DRS varsity hockey avenges last year’s semifinal loss, and maybe SAR JV Basketball should consider a name change….to the 49ers. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We kick things off in varsity basketball where TABC broke open their new gym winning three games at home in the past week.
The Weather Center had its grand opening last Wednesday to watching TABC take on DRS in a rematch of last year’s playoff matchup, won by DRS. This time, however, TABC would get the upper hand, winning 48-30. Dan Poleyeff led the Storm offensive effort with 19 points, 11 in the second half alone. Yonatan Kerstein paced DRS with 13 in the loss. Later on in the week, the Storm would dispatch of Kushner 51-45. Yehoshua Zirman tallied a double-double dropping 14 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. And last night, TABC ran their overall record to 5-0 downing MTA 40-22 in an effort that saw the Storm cede only 1 point in the 2nd quarter.
So TABC is now one of two teams in the West still perfect through roughly 1/3 of the regular season. Ramaz is 4-0 after their win Sunday over Hillel, and in the East the last two unbeaten teams did battle last night with North Shore coming out victorious over Magen David 63-33, leaving the Stars as the lone team with a bagel in the loss column there.
Other scores of note on the week
Heschel defeated Flatbush 60-50
and
SAR trounced Kushner 67-56. Sam Hyman scored 29 in the victory for the Sting.
Over to Varsity Hockey
While DRS’s varsity basketball team were on the losing end of their semifinal rematch, the varsity hockey team fared the opposite. The Wildcats matched up against the MTA Lions at home on Wednesday, where MTA came out victorious in last year’s semifinal on two goals in the final three minutes of the game to head to the finals. There would be no such repeat this year for MTA. Despite an early goal by Ezra Quint for the Lions, the Wildcats would bounce back on goals by Ben Gelman and Ethan Felder to take the victory 2-1. DRS is now a perfect 6-0 on the season.
Other scores of note:
HAFTR topped Flatbush 6-1
Ramaz upended JEC 6-2
and YDE upset Brooklyn rival Magen David 5-2
We move over to JV Basketball where SAR scored 49 points in consecutive wins over Ramaz and Kushner this past week. The Sting took out the Rams on Wednesday night 49-32 despite Sam Reich exploding for 20 points for the Rams. Rafi Kubersky paced the victorious Sting with 16. And on Sunday, SAR dropped Hillel 49-30. Ariel Smith led that scoring with 14 for SAR.
Finally over in JV Hockey, North Shore and MTA pick up their first wins on the season, winning 4-2 games against Flatbush and Hillel respectively. Joseph Lindenblatt netted a hat trick in the Stars victory, while Zach Borgan did the same for the Lions.
