Good morning everyone and welcome to the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. I’m Elliot Weiselberg and here’s what’s happened around the Yeshiva League this past week.
With the Satran tournament serving to whet everyone’s appetite last Sunday, North Shore and HAFTR met in regular season battle last Thursday night with the top spot in the Eastern Conference on the line. HAFTR’s dominating victory the previous Sunday came about mainly through the Hawks suffocating defense, holding the Stars to 11 second-half points. On Thursday night, though, the Stars came out prepared and shelled HAFTR early on, putting up 21 points in the first quarter, thanks to 7 of Josh Cohen’s 20 on the night. The Hawks would not recover from a 36-20 North Shore halftime lead and fell to North Shore by the final score of 59-45. Junior Cody Cohen contributed 15 for North Shore. Alec Schoenfeld scored 12 for HAFTR in the loss. The Stars, with the win, clinch the top seed in the East and home court throughout the playoffs. HAFTR will enjoy the 2nd seed that earns them a first-round bye.
Also of importance over the week, Heschel pulls out 3 victories to stay one game behind division leader Ramaz, toppling MTA, JEC and Hillel.
Speaking of Heschel, the JV basketball team squared off against SAR last night in a game that had the potential to close out the NYC division. Heschel had won 5 straight after dropping their only game of the season to the Sting in early November. An even contest heading into the break in this one, SAR came out of the half on fire, posting a 16-0 run to start the 3rd. Heschel’s D picked up afterwards, limiting the Sting to 7 points in the 4th, but could not get close, as SAR took the win 44-33. SAR is now 7-0 While these two battle for the top spots in the playoff race, the 3rd seed in the division seems to be heading in the direction of the Ramaz Rams after they knocked off MTA this week. The Rams need only a win or an MTA loss to grab the final spot in the division.
Let’s move over to hockey, now, where yet another SAR team was in action tonight as the Sting and Frisch squared off facing very different situations in the race for the Varsity West postseason. Frisch entered the game at 9-2 looking to keep ahead of TABC in the fight for the top divisional spot, while SAR at 5-5-0-1 desperately needed to put distance between them and MTA for the last post-season entry. For the first half of the contest it seemed as if SAR’s desperation would be enough to fuel a victory, with the Sting holding a 2-0 lead, but Frisch turned it on for 5 straight goals by Jono Weitchner, Mikey Rubin, Jacob Bach and two by Odi Haramati, including 3 of the 5 on the power play to propel the Cougars to a 5-3 victory. SAR will look to get back in the win column against Ramaz in the only game remaining in the Varsity hockey league until after the break this coming Saturday night in Ramaz.
The Rams did not fare well in their last matchup either, falling to TABC 4-1 on Wednesday night.
Frisch ended up sweeping the double-header with the Cougars JV team defeating SAR 3-0.
