Thank you Nachum,
Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg and welcome to this special Wednesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. With 24 games happening between Sunday and last night, it was apparent that an extra day to see what transpired was needed to sort the pre-vacation picture out. What’s more interesting, there are still 9 more games to go, including the big HAFTR-North Shore game that played out 5 days early in the Satran Tournament championship in varsity basketball this past Sunday.
Let’s start out in JV Basketball, though where the undefeated Western teams remained undefeated. SAR topped MTA on Monday night 41-38. Rafi Kubersky led the Sting with 13 including all of SAR’s points in the 3rd quarter. With that, both SAR and Heschel clinch a playoff berth. Also Frisch demolished TABC last night 66-45. The 8-0 Cougars forced 22 Storm turnovers to bring their magic number to just one to clinch the New Jersey Division.
Other scores on the week, Or Hatorah pulls into third place in the Brooklyn division, dropping Lev Bonim and HANC locks up a playoff berth in the Long Island division with a win over North Shore.
Speaking of North Shore, the Stars JV hockey team still finds themselves hanging on to a sliver of hope after winning Monday night against HANC 5-4 and last night 3-2 against Westchester. The team heads into the break at 3-5, and can still make the playoffs but will need to defeat both Rambam and DRS on the other side of vacation to do so.
In other action, JEC comes back from two goals down to tie MTA 2-2 last night. The tie is JEC’s 3rd in 9 games this season.
Moving on to varsity hockey action, where Monday night produced an unbelievable comeback out in Uniondale. The varsity game of the HANC- North Shore contest, a fight for one of the last spots in the East, had North Shore up 5-1 with only 6 minutes remaining. But as every coach will tell you, it’s NEVER OVER until the clock shows three zeroes. In this case, it absolutely proved true as HANC rallied off 4 goals to tie the game, to its final 5-5. Ironically, the tie actually helps both teams out, as it’s very likely that both teams will make the playoffs, much to the chagrin of Magen David who if all games turn out as expected will end up one point behind the two and out of the playoffs. Then again, if this game shows us anything, it’s that not everything winds up as expected…
Other scores
Frisch earns a first round bye with a 4-1 win over Ramaz on Monday night and HAFTR keeps the pressure on DRS with a 12-0 win over Solomon Schechter.
Finally, we hit up varsity basketball, where two major matchups rule the week. Last night TABC, fresh off of their Maimonides Tournament victory, met up with Frisch in part 1 of The Battle for Bergen County. Both 7-5 and ranked one after the other in the Jewish hoops America rankings, the winner would be in great position to grab a home game for the first round of the playoffs. Game tied at 28 heading into the 4th, a quarter that featured a crazy sequence of events. TABC up 35-30, Frisch’s Justin Hod drains the 3 and is fouled, completing the 4 point play at the line to bring it within one. On the next play down the court TABC’s Dan Poleyoff sends it right back from beyond the arc, but misses the ensuing free throw. It would not matter though as TABC pushed the lead out to 8 for a 53-45 final. Hod finished the game with a high of 31 points for Frisch.
As if this week needed any more drama, North Shore and HAFTR will finally meet on Thursday in their postponed regular season showdown. However, before that, the two met up this past Sunday in the finals of the Satran Memorial Tournament in HAFTR. If Sunday’s game is any indicator as to what we’ll see Thursday night, it’ll turn the league on its ear, as HAFTR blew away the Stars 44-28. A win on Thursday night would drop North Shore from its perch as the sole undefeated team in the league and would put the two even in losses meaning a dogfight to the end of the regular season for the top spot in the East. For HAFTR it would mean the distinction of being the sole team to put notches up in both Ramaz and North Shore’s loss column this season.
