Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg and straight ahead on the Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Rivalry night in hockey produces interesting results for the Eastern conference, and a preview of tonight’s basketball showdown between North Shore and HAFTR. Let’s get to it.
Monday night proved to be an interesting one in the varsity and JV hockey world as two sets of games featured classic rivalries. We’ll start off out in Cedarhurst, where DRS and HAFTR renewed their yearly tilts with the shot at the top of the division hanging above their heads. HAFTR’s history in DRS’ “Greenhouse” has been abysmal and the trend would continue as both previously undefeated Hawk teams fell in their respective games. In the JV contest, DRS came away winners in overtime 2-1 on a goal by Sophomore offenseman Isaac Fries, who seems to be finding his way into the scorecard in the later stages of several of DRS’s games this season. DRS is now at 4-1, while HAFTR keeps a slim lead over them at 4-0-0-1 with the Overtime loss. In the varsity contest, DRS jumped all over HAFTR early and often. Senior defenseman Sammy Rauch scored less than a minute into the contest to give DRS the early lead and Leo Rubin would add another only three minutes later. Both would tally another goal on the night, en route to a 5-2 victory. Both of HAFTR’s goals came off the stick of the former Wildcat, Junior Forward Evan Feder. DRS remains undefeated at 8-0 and is a win or tie or a North Shore loss or tie away from clinching a playoff berth.HAFTR will need to rebound quickly as they face TABC this coming Thursday night.
In the other rivalry doubleheader, Flatbush and Magen David wrote another chapter in the book of the “Battle for Brooklyn.” In the JV contest, the Falcons went up early with Freshman offenseman Joey Habert notching two goals in a 9 second span, en route a 3-0 lead at the end of one, but the Warriors battled back outplaying the Falcons in the remaining two and a half periods, scoring three en route to a 3-3 tie. Despite the comeback, the tie help`s Flatbush and hurts Magen David in the playoff race. In Varsity, the Falcons mirrored their JV counterparts going up early on two quick goals by Freshman forward Sam Laniado. The varsity, however, would not follow suit as they slammed the door shut scoring three late in the third to take the 5-0 victory.
In other Varsity news, a Sunday featured a rivalry that has blossomed in recent years as TABC and MTA met with no love lost. Much like last year’s championship, however, the Storm shut the Lions down walking away with the 3-0 victory to stay perfect on the season.
Moving over to basketball, the story of the week centers around tonight’s contest between HAFTR and North Shore. HAFTR fresh off of their domination of Western Division leader Ramaz last week look to keep the momentum going as they take on the leaders of the East and the only remaining undefeated varsity basketball team. North Shore is rolling, having won two games last week and can not only put some distance between themselves and the rest of the division for the top seed, but can take a step closer to clinching a playoff berth with a win. Should they be victorious tonight, the Stars would only need a HANC loss or a win on Thursday night over MTA to clinch. A loss tonight, however, and the Varsity basketball East becomes just as much fun to follow as Varsity Hockey West, for those who have followed the Court report in recent weeks. The game is the second half of a doubleheader with the JV squad and is scheduled to begin at around 8:15
