Thanks Nachum,
As Chanukah approaches, the 2017-2018 regular season hits the halfway mark. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update we give a rundown of the league leaders as we head towards part two of the regular season. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
In Boys Varsity Basketball, our last two champions lead the way as DRS and Frisch top the East and West respectively at 8-0. DRS is not the only undefeated team in the East, though, as Magen David lurks behind them at 6-0. The teams are on a collision course into their next contest against each other next Wednesday where only one will leave undefeated. Out West, Frisch has clearly jumped out ahead of the pack, knocking off both TABC and previously undefeated SAR in the past week.
In Boys JV Basketball, five teams still remain undefeated heading into last night. In the East, HAFTR has outstripped the competition compiling a 7-0 record, taking wins over DRS and defending champion Magen David. Shaare Torah came into the week at 3-0, but still have many games in between them at the top, including Magen David whom they hosted last night. Out West, TABC, Frisch and upstart JEC all have a zero in the loss column. Both TABC and Frisch sit at 6-0, after taking wins this past week, while JEC, at 4-0, has gotten off to its best start in years. The three teams will all meet up against each other in two weeks to determine who has the one true advantage heading into the postseason.
In Boys Varsity Hockey, SAR has propelled themselves out in the forefront after knocking off defending champion DRS last week and avenging their only blemish with a 6-0 smashing of TABC, behind five goals by Senior Gordie Kolb. SAR sits atop the West at 9-0-0-1 and is inches away from shoring up a playoff berth. DRS still leads in the East at 7-1-0-1 after dropping HANC 4-1 this past week, but will need to take its wins inside the division to ensure that the road to Lawrence Middle School still runs through the Greenhouse.
In Boys JV Hockey, control of the East belongs to the Rambam Ravens. Rambam is currently 6-0-1, sporting massive wins over Flatbush and North Shore in the past week, and holds the edge over DRS and HAFTR, who have already taken losses to Western Conference Opponents. DRS’s defeat came at the hands of Frisch two weeks ago, while HAFTR dropped its inter-conference contest on Saturday night, losing to TABC. Ironically, the Cougars and Storm are your Western division leaders, sitting at a perfect 5-0.
In Girls Varsity Basketball, the A League West has proven itself to be the superior brand and its current queen bees are the SAR Sting. SAR is 6-0 after handing previously undefeated Frisch its first loss of the year, last week, and knocking off the now-former Eastern Division leading Central by nearly 30 points. They will now face the new Eastern Division leading, Flatbush Falcons, who sit at 4-2, tomorrow night in a rematch of last year’s championship. In the B League, Bruriah has supplanted the perennial favorite SKA, knocking the Sonics off twice in the last two weeks by 11 points and 9 points and have built a 2 game lead on the rest of the league, following Ilan’s victory over Magen David last week.
Finally, Girls JV is already in post-season mode as the three Western playoff teams have already been decided. SAR, Frisch and Maayanot know that they will be playing once the “second season” starts. The only thing to be determined is rank. In the East, North Shore seemed to have a stranglehold, however, a recent 13 point loss to HAFTR has thrown the doors wide open as both teams currently sit with one loss.
