Thanks Nachum,
Mid-terms are upon us and vacation is mere hours away but Yeshiva League Action still rolls on. Today, on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Kushner JV Hockey wins an OT stunner, SAR and Ma’ayanot see a double-extra doubleheader and new Stars in the sky after a big week in JV Basketball. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Last Saturday night was not a positive night for the JV Hockey Kushner Cobras. A tie to JEC threw their entire post-season hopes in jeopardy with two tough games still to go. In order for the Cobras to right the ship, they would need to pick up points against the undefeated Western Division leading and defending champion, Frisch Cougars. For 36 minutes, the two teams battled, yielding only 1 goal apiece sending the game to overtime. In the extra session, Kushner would get themselves back on track as Freshman A.J. Keiser would find the back of the Cougar net for the 2-1 Cobra victory. The win and the two points were exactly what Kushner needed to not only clinch a playoff berth, but keep them alive in the race for the division crown. Sophomore Josh Lando scored the regulation goal for Kushner. Sophomore Jonah Rubin scored the lone goal for Frisch.
In JV Basketball, the landscape of the Eastern Division changed this week with two games, both involving the Shaare Torah Stars. With two victories, the Stars have put themselves into position to clinch a First-Round Bye. A 75-67 win over DRS and a 78-65 victory over defending champion Magen David increased Shaare Torah’s record to 7-2, and left the other two scrambling to keep their respective spots. Sophomores Eddie Swaid and Joey Haber led the way in both games, with a combined 48 and 47 points scored, respectively. The Stars will have the opportunity to clinch a First Round Bye with a game against Ezra on the other side of the break.
Finally, SAR and Ma’ayanot met up in a girls JV doubleheader last Tuesday. Both games involved teams fighting for the same prize and neither could be contained within the confines of the 4 quarters. The varsity game would see SAR stay undefeated with a 38-35 win, leaving the Sting a win away from clinching the top spot in the West, while the Rapids will now need to scramble to secure a first-round home game in a packed division. In JV, the stakes were very much the same as both teams fought to stay out of having to go on the road in the First round and for SAR to stay in position to clinch the division. Ma’ayanot looked to have the edge, leading 34-32 with under a minute to go, but a layup by Sophomore Olivia Weinstein would send the game to Overtime. There would be no scoring in Overtime right until the very last few seconds when Freshman Yael Berkowitz took a pass in the low post and banked it in for the game-winning bucket, and the 36-34 final.
