Thanks Nachum!
Before I begin, Amanda and I would like to wish a huge thank you to everyone who reached out to us over the past few days with Mazal Tovs and well-wishes. They are greatly appreciated and your kindness and thoughtfulness really do mean a lot. Thank you also to Nachum for allowing us to do this Sports Update a little bit late.
Today on this, the final JM in the AM Sports Update for the 2016-2017 season, we recap the last 2 championships of the year, Girls Varsity Hockey and Boys Baseball, with one school becoming the undisputed kings and queens of the spring sport season. All that and just a smidge more straight ahead. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Two finals separate us from the 2017 summer months. The first of these two occurred last Wednesday night in Frisch as the West top seeded Kushner Cobras took on the West #4 seed Ma’ayanot Rapids in the Girls Varsity Hockey final. Kushner took both meetings between the teams in the regular season, but Ma’ayanot looked well up to the task to becoming the second straight 4 seed to take home the girls hockey championship. Scoreless through two and a half periods of play, overtime looked to be a near certainty. However, with just over 3 minutes to go, the best offensive combination of the year struck once more. With the ball behind the goal line, sophomore Arianna Matthew sent a pass to the middle straight to the stick of freshman Hannah Nussbaum, who, for the 23rd time this year, put the ball home to break the 0-0 deadlock and give the Cobras the lead. Two minutes later, with the Ma’ayanot goalie pulled, Junior Olivia Lefkovitz would ice the game away for the 2-0 Kushner win. Game MVP honors went to Cobra goalie Sophomore Julia Moreale for the clean sheet.
In the last final, this past Sunday, Kushner also found itself with a rooting interest as the boys baseball squad ran into the undefeated Frisch Cougars. Frisch opened up the scoring in the 2nd when Ezra Rudansky knocked in RJ Fischer who tripled his way into scoring position to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. It would take 4 innings, but Kushner, thanks to some nifty base running would answer back. Senior Sam Raab walked, stole second and then scored on a Koby Stadtmauer single to knot the game at 1. The game would be decided one inning later. Kushner Senior Sam Bernstein singled, stole second and was bunted over to third where Jonathan Kirsch laid down a good old-fashioned suicide squeeze. Bernstein reached home safely to give Kushner the 2-1 lead. Bernstein would then lock down the game on his own capping off the complete game with nine strikeouts, and giving Kushner the victory.
So, folks, with those two results, we’ve reached the end of the 2016-2017 spring season and the 2016-2017 school sports year. Thank you all for tuning in to the JM in the AM Sports Update for the last 8 months and for supporting youth sports league-wide. Thank you Nachum for, once again, ensuring that these kids and their accomplishments have a home to be brought to light for, yet, another year.
For Nachum, myself and all of us here at JM in the AM, for the last time in the 2016-2017 sports season, this has been the JM in the AM Sports Update, see you next season, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
