Thanks Nachum!
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, if it seems like I’ll be repeating myself for the next 4 minutes, it’s really because I am. Two schools pockmark the Yeshiva League landscape this coming week, and it’s nothing that we haven’t already seen this year. All that and maybe more straight ahead, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in hockey where this update might make you think of boys in March, rather than girls in May, but Girls Hockey, will, in fact, feature a repeat of the Boys championship as Frisch and SAR will square off in Maayanot tomorrow night. Both teams advanced on shutouts, as League top seed Frisch blanked Kushner 3-0 while SAR rolled over East champion HAFTR 6-0 to square off for a championship for the second time this year. SAR will look for its second championship in a row with the girls having won last year over Heschel and its second hockey championship this year, with the boys having beaten Frisch a few months ago.
Speaking of SAR beating Frisch, boys soccer saw the Sting knock off the Cougars 9-8 last week in the semifinals, as Senior star Gabe Sklar netted 8 goals to lead SAR to the finals where they will square off with another Jersey nemesis, TABC. The Storm dominated North Shore 9-3 behind Avishai Avidan’s 4 goals to advance to tonight’s championship in JEC. The game will follow the Boys JV Championship which will also feature SAR and North Shore, after their wins over TABC and Frisch making it very apparent that the powerhouses of the future in Yeshiva League Soccer are exactly as they are right now.
Over in girls soccer, the JV championship saw Frisch defeat Ma’ayanot 6-5 in TABC last Wednesday. The varsity squad will look to do the same tomorrow night in Ma’ayanot against who else, SAR as the teams will lock up at 6:30 prior to the hockey finals between the two schools that I just mentioned a moment ago. Frisch, the top seed pulled out a nail-biter 6-4 win over Kushner while SAR steamrolled over SKA to give us yet another finals matchup between the two schools.
That being said, by this time Thursday morning, only boys volleyball and the outdoor sports will remain undecided.
Boys Softball will be at the semifinal stage as Heichel Hatorah and Keter Torah, Magen David and MAY, HANC and YDE and Maor and Hillel will have their quarterfinals before the week is over. The same for Darchai and Netzach Hatorah, Flatbush and Hillel, TABC and MAY and HAFTR and YDE in JV, and MTA and DRS, TABC and Frisch, Flatbush and SAR and JEC and Heschel in Baseball. Girls Softball expects to be in a similar position as HAFTR and Ilan and SKA and Frisch will play this week, with HANC and Hillel and Bruriah and Shulamith all to be determined.
The 2023 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament will take place Sunday June 11th in HAFTR. As usual, the 8-team event will be a fundraiser for Hatzolah, with our acclaimed memorabilia raffle, this year highlighted by our top prize, an autographed Adam Fox All-Star Game Jersey. Tickets for that and the rest of our amazing prizes will be available on our new and improved website which will go live over the next few days.
