The transcription for this morning’s update is below.
Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Magen David re-re-repeats as Satran Tournament champions, DRS jumps into the drivers seat in the East in Varsity hockey and two more teams punch playoff tickets in the JV Basketball West. All that and more coming up, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg!
They say that one good turn deserves another and in the case of the Magen David varsity basketball Warriors, another and another, as they took home their 4th straight Scott Satran Memorial Tournament Championship. Magen David knocked off the host HAFTR Hawks in the finals to capture the 2023 crown, after mowing down HANC, Frisch and Jewish Cultural during the first three days of the tournament and a come from behind win over North Shore in the semifinals. Asher Melamed put on a show and was rewarded for it with his 2nd straight tournament MVP award. In Yeshiva League action, a light week on the hardwood sees Flatbush clinch a playoff berth with a 50-30 win over defending champion Ramaz, but Ramaz edges toward clinching a berth of their own with a 62-48 win over Heschel last night for their 6th win, tying them for 5th in the West with JEC. SAR and Hillel also took wins on the week, punching their post-season tickets as they fight for high West seeds.
In JV, Ramaz and Hillel pick up wins over Kushner and Frisch, respectively, each earning their 6th win and a spot in the playoffs. The two are the odds-on favorites to host a first-round home game out West with Frisch, MTA and Hillel fighting for their right to play one of them.
And in Girls Varsity, SKA finishes off their perfect regular season, defeating Central 73-40 for their 12th win of the year. Daphna Steinmetz paced the Sonics with 23 in the victory.
Over to Hockey where DRS puts up a three-spot, taking wins over Solomon Schechter, Magen David and Flatbush to move to 9-2-0-1. The wins put them two points up on YDE, the Thunder faltering in a 6-1 loss to MTA in the Heights, dealing a blow to YDE’s division title hopes. Both teams have two games left and YDE the tiebreak, but the recent results see DRS on a hot streak, while YDE seems to be dropping back toward the rest of the division. In other action SAR downed HAFTR 9-3, putting SAR in prime position to make a run at a playoff home game. The Sting currently sit at 15 points, but will next contend with a Ramaz team who took a win off them earlier this season.
In JV, four teams have clinched post-season tickets heading into the break, as DRS defeats Flatbush to keep up with North Shore who takes a win off JEC. Out West, SAR defeats Ohr Yisroel 5-1, clinching berths for both them and TABC. The final two spots will come down to a four-team race of Flatbush, Ohr Yisroel, MTA and Frisch and will likely not be decided until the last day of the season.
With most schools on Yeshiva Break for the next two weeks, the Sports Update will be as well. We will be back in two weeks to set up and break down the final push toward the 2023 postseason.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg!
