We are nearing the end of the line for Winter Sports as hockey gears up for its finals this weekend with Basketball not too far behind. We’ll recap the last week of playoff action and get you ready for what’s to come. All that and more straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
After this past week ¾ of the hockey championships are set. In Varsity, the Route 4 Rivalry will take center stage as TABC and Frisch will square off for the 2021-2022 title. Frisch returns to the finals, technically as the last team to win the varsity championship after knocking off SAR 4-3 last night in Frisch. The West #2 seed jumped out to a 4-0 lead but had to survive a scare in the last 2 minutes as SAR brought the game to within 1. The road was not as bumpy for TABC as the Storm trounced HANC 7-1. Frisch took both regular season meetings, including a thriller in OT in Frisch a little less than a month ago. Stay tuned to JM in the AM for details on when the championships will be played and how you can tune in to all of the action.
JV’s final will be set after tonight when HAFTR travels to TABC in the last remaining semifinal. The winner will meet up with the East top seed, DRS. The Wildcats emerged victorious over the last JV team to technically win a championship, Kushner 5-2. The Cobras scored early, but DRS scored two quick goals in the latter stages of the first period to take the lead and would never give it back. Stay tuned for more info on this championship as well as the week progresses.
Varsity Basketball is headed toward its own finish line as the semifinals will be set once Frisch squares off with DRS tonight. The Cougars advanced to the quarters following an 11 point win over MTA and will match wits with the East top seed with the winner earning a date with West #2 Ramaz. The Rams took care of Magen David 51-43 behind 18 points apiece from Seniors Julius Rubenstein and Caleb Rosenfeld in what may be their last game in front of the home crowd. The other side of the bracket will see two West seeds square off in the semis as West #1 SAR defeated YDE 50-33 and West #3 TABC upset Flatbush in Brooklyn, 67-62.
Only one game played in JV basketball over the last week as Magen David defeated TABC to advance to the Semis. They will take on West top seed Frisch, while tomorrow night, East #1 Flatbush will square off with East #3 North Shore with a trip to the finals on the line.
