Nachum Segal welcomed Michael Diament, Executive Director of Public Policy for the Orthodox Union to this morning’s JM in the AM for an important OU Political Action Update. They discussed an important amendment to S. 761: Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2013 introduced by Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and John Hoeven (R-ND) whose goal is to direct the Secretary of Energy to establish a pilot program to award grants to non-profit organizations, including religious non-profits — like PC(USA) congregations — to make energy-efficiency improvements to their buildings. Because many of the current incentives for energy efficiency are found in the tax code, it has historically been difficult for non-profit organizations to fund such improvements; this amendment would enable “houses of worship” and other non-profits to invest in more energy efficient buildings.
