Nachum interviewed Devorah Zaks, Director of Ahavas Chesed USA, about the organization and their current campaign at chesedfund.com.
From the Ahavas Chesed USA website:
Ahavas Chesed, an active division of Congregation Ahavas Chesed USA Inc., was born to fill a void that has been lacking in our community.
Unfortunately, there are many families with sick children in the hospital, and the parents do not get a break to go home to their other children. Most of the patients are babies and toddlers who cannot be left alone. Their parents are worn out from the emotional stress of having a sick child (sometimes more than one), and the physical stress of spending days and nights dealing with the medical needs of their child. At times, they are forced to neglect their other obligations, such as their other children, sleep, and jobs. The only way that they make it through the crisis is when kind volunteers take shifts with their precious children, so they can go home for a few hours each day.
You can make a difference by signing up to join our organization. We have a few group chats full of amazing volunteers. You will receive a text from one of our caseworkers when a shift is needed, generally a day in advance. If you are able to take the shift, you will respond privately to the caseworker indicated in the text, and she will provide you with the information needed.
These children are Klal Yisroel’s responsibility! This world is built on kindness, and we must remember that Hashem sends us opportunities for our sake.
To join as a volunteer, please fill out our online application, and upon acceptance of your application, we will add you to the chat that is most befitting to your location and schedule. Remember, even if your availability is limited, you can still make a difference by showing your selflessness and joining as a volunteer. Transportation is available in specific locations.
Remember, by joining Ahavas Chesed USA, you are becoming a lifesaver to these families and the Zchus is immeasurable.
May Hashem bless you that you are always able to give, and never know of the difficulty of being on the receiving end.
