Today on the first Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of 2020, TABC and DRS dominate the JV stage, Frisch and SAR set up for a showdown in varsity hockey and the Scott Satran Memorial Basketball tournament takes over the Varsity landscape for the weekend. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Four games on the week in Varsity hockey, leading off with Frisch completing the sweep over TABC, knocking the Storm off in Teaneck 5-2 behind four goals by Senior Elliot Eisner. Eisner’s week would not end there as he tallied two goals, which, along with Senior Jason Alter’s pair and Senior Evan Solomon’s shutout earned the Cougars a 4-0 interconference victory over HAFTR. The two wins for Frisch improve their record to 9-1, placing them two points behind SAR, who now sit at 10-1 after defeating Hillel last night. Frisch and SAR are on a collision course, meeting up twice over the next 3 weeks, with the Western Conference title at stake. TABC would also be in action again, squaring off with long-time East rival DRS. The contest would end in a 2-2 tie, which, given how things are going this season, will almost virtually ensure that the two will potentially meet up in DRS in the Quarterfinals around playoff time.
Moving over to JV Hockey where five games were played, three of which were interconference affairs. DRS and TABC would also meet up here, and unlike the varsity game, this would have a victor. Two powerplay goals by Sophomore AJ Seplowitz would power the Storm to a 2-1 home victory, meaning that the division could very well come down to their contest with Frisch in early February. Frisch kept pace taking wins over HAFTR and JEC to stay undefeated. In the only contest won by an East team, YDE defeated MTA 5-2, meaning that Kushner is still alive following their win over Ramaz last night, and the 4th and final JV West seed will come down to JEC’s contest with SAR, or it’s final game of the season where they will play MTA. Should JEC not defeat SAR, the winner of the MTA-JEC game will earn the playoff berth. If it ends in a tie, the final spot will belong to Kushner.
Speaking, again of DRS and TABC, the two schools find themselves in prime position in JV Basketball as well. Both teams are at 8-1 following wins this week, DRS taking a 50-42 win over HANC and TABC a dominating win over the Idea School. In the East, DRS can win the division with a win over Shaare Torah tomorrow night. Shaare Torah looking to pull itself back into the playoff hunt following a win over Derech Hatorah last night to improve to 3-4. Magen David finishes off its season at 8-2 following a 51-28 win over North Shore. The Warriors will need to await Flatbush’s finale with HANC to determine who will get the byes in the East. Out West, a battle of two one loss teams saw Frisch keep pace with TABC defeating MTA 48-30. This leaves three teams with one loss at the top of the West with the Storm, Cougars and the SAR Sting. In the middle of the West, the battle for the final spot is still undecided, but Heschel took a step back in the right direction defeating Kushner 46-36.
Finally, in varsity basketball, there were only two league games on the week, because all of the action was focused on the Scott Satran Memorial Tournament. 10 of the Yeshiva League’s top teams converged on HAFTR this weekend and the results were all too familiar this year. Another trophy will be added to the vault in Magen David after their 51-45 win over host HAFTR behind 15 from Senior Edmond Antebi and 13 from Tournament MVP Junior Joe Sultan to clinch their third tournament win on the year and avenge one of their two Yeshiva League regular season losses. In regular season action, TABC pulled back even with Hillel following a 48-27 win over MTA. For the Lions, it wouldn’t all be negative this week as they knocked off Waterbury last night 44-40 to pull into 6th place in the West.
