No fooling, ladies and gentlemen, April is here and Spring sports are in full bloom. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Hockey continues with the girls taking the floor, MTA outlasts Ramaz to rule Boys Varsity Soccer and it wouldn’t be Spring without some diamond sports as Baseball gets underway. Last week, we discussed Boys Volleyball. This week, we’ll kick off with the other sport carrying over from Winter to Spring, as Girls Hockey works its way through the regular season. The East and the West find themselves in different situations as the West is a pileup of five teams, while the East sees two of its teams jumping out to a fast start. The two top teams in each would square off last night as the defending champions, 2-0 Heschel Heat, fresh off of a 5-0 victory over its finals opponent, the Kusher Cobras, took on the 3-0-2 North Shore Stars. Last year, these two teams met in the First Round, with Heschel dominating the Stars 8-1 on their road to the championship. Last night, the Stars would be held to one goal again, but, it would be a notch in the win column for North Shore, taking the 1-0 victory. Freshman Lillian Levanthal’s first period goal would be the only score on the night and Senior Noga Arjang would shut the door in net, keeping the Stars unblemished heading into their last two games of the year. In other action, Ma’ayanot took their second win of the year, a 3-1 win over Central and Frisch used four third period goals to break open a 3-2 game over Flatbush, for a 7-2 victory, their first on the year.
Moving over to Boys Varsity Soccer, where MTA and Ramaz met in a barnburner this past Sunday in the Heights. The two teams would combine for 25 goals, as the Lions handed Ramaz their first regulation loss on the year 13-12. MTA now finds themselves at 4-0-0-1, leading the Central and coming into last night, the league with 9 points. The Lions only blemish on the season, an 11-10 overtime loss at the hands of the Flatbush Falcons. In other action, TABC handed JEC its first loss by the score of 4-2, DRS edged Rambam 7-6, Hillel upended SAR 12-4 and HANC stayed perfect atop the East, improving to 3-0 with a 10-9 win over HAFTR.
In Boys JV Soccer, the Westchester Wildcats have jumped out to a commanding Central division lead halfway through the season. Heading into last night, Westchester held a two win lead on Magen David and YDE, having swept the season series with the Warriors and a matchup with the Thunder in Brooklyn last night that with a win could put the division title firmly within their grasp. Their only loss, an 8-1 drubbing at the hands of TABC. The Storm find themselves atop the West at 4-0, but are not alone. Joining them, their usual foes, the Frisch Cougars, also at 4-0. The two will remain tied, at least until Thursday night, when they face each other in TABC. We’ll have the results of both games for you, next week, right here on the JM in the AM Sports Update.
Finally, it would not be a spring sport season if we didn’t talk about the diamond sports. Boys Baseball got underway this past week, with Flatbush and HAFTR squaring off. The Falcons, behind 13 strikeouts from junior pitcher Dani Sharabi took the first win of the season 5-4. The deciding at-bat would come in the 6th inning, Flatbush up 4-3, Sol Laniado would walk, steal 2nd, take 3rd on a passed ball and then slide in to home ahead of the tag on a Simon Massry grounder for their insurance run. The Falcons will next square off with DRS, tonight in East Rockaway.
