The first weather-related postponements hit the Yeshiva League this past week, but it didn’t stop high impact action from happening across all of the Yeshiva League. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Hockey’s JV East gets crazier, a battle of the undefeated in Girls Varsity Basketball and only two remain unbeaten in varsity boys basketball. All that and more! Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We got our first taste of winter this past Thursday with unexpected levels of snowfall cancelling out a full slate that included some pretty big games. Some have already been made up in the short window since and we will touch on one of those in just a moment.
We’ll start out in Girls Varsity Basketball, where the last two undefeated teams held court on Tuesday night. 5-0 Central and 4-0 SAR met up in Queens as the best of the East and West squared off in, what was for them, a mid-season matchup. For SAR, the Sting are hoping to carry what they did against the East’s best through the rest of the season and into the second season. SAR jumped out to a 29-9 lead at the half and never looked back, rolling to a 53-24 win. For the Sting, it is now 23-straight regular season victories stretching back to December of 2016. The Sting will now look to keep the streak going against the only team that has handed them both their last regular season and post season loss, the Frisch Cougars. The two teams will meet up in Frisch next Tuesday night.
Over in Varsity Boys Basketball, only two unbeaten teams remain, and they are the Heschel Heat in the West and the Rambam Ravens in the East. Heschel improved to 4-0 after a 69-52 win over the previously- undefeated Frisch Cougars. Senior Jake Bohrer and Junior Ricky Sutton led the Heat with 24 and 18 points respectively, Frisch Senior Max Meyehoff paced the Cougars with 15 in the loss. Out East, the Ravens hit the 4-0 mark this past week as well with an 88-66 win over Shaare Torah. Senior Ethan Aaron led the Ravens with 25 in the win. Despite being in two different conferences, the two teams will actually meet, but not until February. Whether or not either of these teams will still be undefeated come that game remains to be seen. In other action, TABC picked up their third straight win after starting 0-2, defeating HANC 45-30 and North Shore followed up their upset over Magen David with a 48-31 win over Ramaz.
Moving to hockey where the JV East has become a wide-open battle. This past Sunday, the division leading North Shore Stars were upset by previously winless YDE 1-0 in YDE. So to follow the early action this season, North Shore loses by a wide margin to Kushner, who only defeats DRS 3-1. North Shore then goes and defeats DRS. Somewhere in the middle are HAFTR, Rambam, Flatbush and Magen David, and only two points separate 2nd place from last. Meanwhile, in the West, not as much drama as Kushner and SAR have separated themselves from the pack and TABC is primed to do so once they’ve hit the meat of their schedule. Kushner now remains the only West undefeated team, knocking off SAR last night. TABC kept pace, dominating MTA.
Finally, in Varsity, DRS kept clean dominating HANC 9-1 and Magen David avenged and reversed an early season loss, defeating Solomon Schechter, 5-1.
With the holiday taking up most of the next week, the JM in the AM Sports update will take a little vacation as well. We will be back in two weeks with more Yeshiva League Action, right here on the Nachum Segal Network.
