The first of week of November brings with it Yeshiva League action taking place both in and out of the Metropolitan area. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, results from Varsity basketball tournaments in both Memphis and Los Angeles, DRS remains undefeated in Varsity hockey, and the first “Battle of the Birds” in JV Hockey takes extra sessions. We’ll start off in Varsity Basketball where two tournaments took place this weekend. We hit the road and head south to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2018 Cooper Memphis National Invitational basketball tournament, where, after a one-year hiatus, the Cooper title has made its way back to the Metropolitan area. Last year, the Northeast region was shut out of the finals for the first time since 2011, with the title being fought over by two teams from California. This year, the top seeded Magen David Warriors decided to right the ship, rolling over the competition, which included a convincing romp over the upstart 11-seed Rochelle Zell Tigers 81-55 in the finals. Junior Albert Nsiri and Senior Ray Jajati outscored the entire Tiger squad on their own, with Nsiri dropping 38 to help ice the victory for the Warriors, giving them their 2nd tournament win on the early season. The point total would propel Nsiri to 2nd in points scored in the tournament, one of three New York area participants to place in the top-5 with Rambam’s Aaron Azose taking home the scoring crown and Flatbush’s Jack Rosow finishing 4th. Rosow’s Falcon squad would make it 2-for-2 at Memphis, bringing home the Tier 2 championship with a 56-44 win over Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School.
Out West, the Steve Glouberman annual basketball tournament took place with a not-as-successful showing for the Yeshiva League participants. The SAR Sting were one of five New York/New Jersey participants in the tournament and were fortunate to stand above the pack and make it to the finals where they would face the Shalhevet Firehawks. Their luck would come to an abrupt end with Shalhevet opening up the game scoring the first 13 points en route to a 64-23 victory for the hometown Firehawks. The Shalhevet duo of Zack Muller and Asher Dauer were awarded co-tournament MVP honors for their accomplishments. Back home, Gavriel Kahn’s 20 points led DRS to a 61-47 win over North Shore and HANC downed YDE 51-44.
Switching gears to the hockey world, the DRS Wildcats remain perfect at 3-0. Wednesday night, DRS traveled to SAR to meet up with the defending champions in what has seemingly become an every-year showdown between the two schools. The Sting would jump out to a quick lead early in the first, but it would be the Wildcats having the last laugh, scoring three straight unanswered goals to keep rank with HAFTR as the only undefeated teams left in the East. Twenty miles south of Riverdale, the Rambam Ravens and Flatbush Falcons met up in the first “Battle of the Birds” matchup of the 2018-2019 season. In the JV contest, the two teams would require overtime to settle the bill, with Freshman Sam Korman netting the game-winner, his second for the Ravens, in a 3-2 victory. The Varsity tilt looked destined to head to an extra session as well before late-game heroics sent the home-squad to victory. After Junior Jonathan Yizhaky gave the Ravens a 2-1 lead on a powerplay goal in the 2nd, Flatbush would get a tally 50 seconds into the third from Senior Ezra Dweck to knot the score at 2. The game would stay square until just under 2:00 to go in the 3rd when Flatbush Junior Marty Elmekias would break the tie and would also add an empty netter to give Falcons the 4-2 victory.
