In anticipation of שבת נגישות – Accessibility Shabbat – Nachum hosted Rabbi Yuval Charlow, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshivat Hesder Amit Orot Shaul and one of the founders of Tzohar, an organization of religious Zionist Orthodox rabbis in Israel on JM in the AM to get all the details. “שבת נגישות – Accessibility Shabbat – highlights the need for synagogues all around the country to be more accessible to the disabled community. December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities which is why this weekend was chosen to highlight the needs of the disabled with specific regard to the synagogue experience. Tzohar has spearheaded this effort under the guidance of Rabbi Yuval Cherlow, a renowned ethicist. Accessibility is not just making sure that there is space for 1 or 2 wheelchairs. It means being able to serve the blind or deaf community with special prayer books or acoustic considerations or even what to do to allow a guide dog into shul. It means addressing the emotionally disabled as well and seeing the ‘invisible’ members of the community and many other examples.”
