Up next on the Tuesday morning JM in the AM sports report, take a dash of drama, a smatter of controversy and the essence of playoffs and you get February Yeshiva league action! Today, MTA and Magen David go to OT in varsity basketball, Kushner flips the coin on the JV Hockey world and teams punch their playoff tickets all across the board.
Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The top teams in the varsity basketball central division did battle last week as MTA and Magen David met in Manhattan. A Magen David victory would wrap up the division and provide a clear path to the #1 playoff seed. Holding a 2 point lead out of the half, the Lions torched the Warriors on a 17-6 run to take a 43-30 lead late in the 3rd. In the 4th, however, Magen David climbed back into the game, draining 6 threes to grab a 53-51 lead with under a minute to go. MTA’s Zak Lenik put one home to tie the game up and then, with only seconds to go, a Magen David jumper missed the mark on a controversial no-call and we would go to an extra session. Still hot under the collar from the last play of regulation, Magen David was assessed a technical, giving MTA two free throws, both drained by Senior Point Guard Shai Kaminetzky to start the OT period. The two teams would trade buckets and with the game tied at 58 with 2.3 seconds to go, Kaminetzky drained a contested baseline jumper to win the game for the Lions. Morris Dweck led the game with 20 for the Warriors, Kaminetzky roared for the Lions with 14. In other Varsity basketball action, MTA also puts a damper on YDE’s playoff hopes. The win puts MTA and Magen David into a virtual tie at 12-1. DRS upends Rambam, Flatbush defeats HANC 59-36 to lock up a post-season berth and Kushner outlasts RTMA 64-56.
Over in JV, DRS and HANC both win this week, keeping them in striking distance of East leader North Shore. SAR defeats Magen David, putting pressure on MTA and Flatbush in the Central. SAR finishes the season at 7-3, while Flatbush and MTA are both knotted at 6-2. Hillel takes two this week over Heschel and RTMA to jump over TABC and clinch the third spot in the West. This leaves TABC, winners over Heschel this week, to battle it out with Rambam, HAFTR and Derech Hatorah for the three remaining Wild Card spots.
Now over to hockey, the JV world went for a spin, or more of a “flip” if you will, this past Motzai Shabbos. The Kushner Cobras, needing a win to stay alive in the run for the final playoff spots out West found themselves faced with the task of doing battle with division leading TABC. The Storm, coming into the game at 8-1 had much on the line as well, as a win would clinch the Western Division crown. However, like any threatened snake, the Cobras struck early and often. Sophmore Offenseman Ilan Slonim, celebrating his birthday today, quickly deposited two into the TABC net while Sophomore defenseman Louis Reiz and freshman offenseman Cory Kops added their own to push Kushner out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first. Sophomore Effie Auman would add another, giving the Cobras a 5-3 victory. The TABC loss temporarily paralyzed the JV West as it meant that both TABC and SAR would finish the season tied at 8-2. With all tiebreakers being equal, the division crown was left to the flip of a coin, ultimately won by TABC earning them the JV West title. In other JV hockey news, HAFTR stuns North Shore 4-3 in overtime and Rambam eliminates YDE from post-season contention with a 4-2 victory.
Jumping quickly to varsity hockey, Magen David gains the edge in the battle for the final playoff spot in the East, winning two of three games this week including one against the team they are battling, HANC by the score of 5-3. A Magen David win or a HANC loss will give the Warriors the final ticket to post-season play. TABC takes two on the week, defeating JEC and SAR. MTA keeps pace with the Storm, dealing Frisch a hefty 2-1 blow in their race for a bye. SAR wraps up a home playoff game defeating Rambam 2-1 and Kushner wins three this week over North Shore, Hillel and Solomon Shechter to clinch one of the two remaining spots out West.
With the season winding down next week in all sports, next Tuesday’s report should have playoff matchups ready to be revealed. Until then, this has been your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
