Straight ahead on a special Wednesday edition of the JM in the AM sports update: The brackets are almost there and we’ll run through what we have for you.
Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
The JV hockey playoff picture straightened itself out Monday night as a trio of games decided who’s in, who’s out, and who goes where. Rambam blanked HAFTR 2-0 behind goals by Ephraim Fruchter and Avi Martin, NS dominated Magen David and Ramaz, down 1-0 late in the 3rd, scored 4 times to bring themselves back from the brink of elimination. Those games, along with Frisch’s 7-1 win over MTA, bring a close to the JV Hockey season. The playoffs break down like this: The East will send DRS, North Shore, Rambam and HAFTR to the postseason while the West will send TABC, SAR, Ramaz and Frisch in that order. Bracket A will be led by Eastern division winner DRS who will host the West #4 seed Frisch. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Rambam at SAR game. SAR is the West’s #2 seed, while Rambam’s win over HAFTR clinched it the Eastern 3 seed. In the B Bracket, TABC, the West Champion hold the #1 seed and will host East #4 HAFTR. The winner of that game will meet the winner of the East #2 and West #3 match-up, North Shore hosting Ramaz, who clinched a playoff berth after running off 2 straight wins in the last 5 days.
Varsity hockey is nearly there. With one game being postponed due to the inclement weather this weekend, 4 teams have their fates hanging in the balance. The game between TABC and Hillel will not only determine who the last team to make the playoff is, but will also determine who the Western Conference champion will be. For the action that did happen over the last week, we surely got a taste of what late March might be like. Senior offense-man Jake Perlow scored in OT to give DRS a 2-1win over MTA. Hillel grinded out a 1-0 win over Ramaz. HAFTR dropped Rambam on the road 3-1.Ramaz kept their playoff hopes alive topping Kushner 5-2 and finally, MTA rebounded to drop TABC 3-2 on an amazing comeback by the Lions, scoring 2 goals in the final 8 seconds for the victory. Here is how the varsity brackets break down. The East bracket is complete. Division champion DRS and #2 HAFTR earn byes. In the first round, #4 Rambam will play host to #5 North Shore, while the Brooklyn rivalry will have another go when #6 seed Magen David plays #3 Flatbush. Out West, TABC and MTA have both earned byes. Currently, MTA holds a 1-point lead over TABC and the tiebreaker, meaning that for TABC to repeat as division champs, a win alone will be necessary. In the first round matchups, #4 SAR will play host to #5 Kushner, while #3 Frisch awaits to see whether it faces Ramaz or Hillel as the #6 seed. Ramaz holds a 1-point lead, with the 2 teams splitting their season series.
Turning our attention to varsity basketball, With Magen David’s 69-38 pummeling of MTA and North Shore’s win over HAFTR last night, the picture becomes slightly clearer . Here is what we do know. Magen David and North Shore have won their divisions and earned first round byes. Frisch and Ramaz will do battle tonight to determine who the Western division winner will be. Should Frisch win, Frisch will earn a bye as will MTA as the top wild-card team. Should Ramaz win, however, Ramaz and Frisch will be tied at 12-2 and whomever doesn’t earn the tiebreak will also be tied with MTA for the final bye spot. Whomever walks away without the bye will lead the first round pack consisting of DRS, SAR, and TABC hosting first-round games against HAFTR and 3 teams out of a four team pack, Rambam, Heschel, Hillel and Flatbush.
Finally, JV basketball finds itself in a similar position. Two divisions have crowned champions and 11 of the 12 playoff seeds have been determined. North Shore and Frisch have completed perfect regular seasons and have won the East and the West respectively. Joining them with automatic berths from the East and West are DRS and HANC and Ramaz and Hillel. In the Central, Flatbush will play YDE tonight. A Flatbush win gives them the division. Otherwise, it’ll be SAR with that distinction. Regardless, SAR, Flatbush and MTA come out of the Central with the automatic berths. Two of the three wild cards have been also been determined as TABC and Derech HaTorah advance to the playoffs. Rambam and HAFTR will battle it out in a play-in game for the final spot as both finish the season with a 4-6 record, and even in all tiebreakers.
Tune in next week for all First-Round playoff action. And that was your JM in the AM sports update. I’m Elliot Weiselberg
