Thank you Nachum,
Last night marked the end of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs in our hockey and basketball leagues and we’re going to take a look at the playoff setup for all of them. Good morning and welcome to the Wednesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update. I’m Elliot Weiselberg and here’s what’s happening around the Yeshiva League.
Tuesday night featured the last of the varsity hockey games with significant impact. In the East, DRS, on two goals by senior forward Avi Genachowski, outlasted HAFTR to win the Varsity East conference. As a result, DRS will earn home court throughout the playoffs, just as they’ve enjoyed every year since 2010. In the West, Eli Schwartz netted two as Kushner blanked Frisch 4-0 to lock up the 3rd bye slot in the West. As a result of the two finishes, here is how the playoffs look for varsity hockey: In the East, DRS and HAFTR earn byes. #3 Flatbush will host #6 HANC and #4 Rambam will host #5 North Shore. In the West, TABC, Frisch and Kushner earn slots 1-3 and each earn byes. #4 Ramaz will host #5 MTA.
Last night also marked the start of the varsity basketball playoffs with #6 Magen David meeting up with Brooklyn rival #3 Flatbush. The underdog seemed primed for an upset as the Warriors led by 11 with only a few minutes to go, but the Falcons soared back into the game on the shooting of Joey Dayan, Nathan Haddad and Joey Dweck to pull even and force Overtime. In the extra session, the Falcons used the momentum to help fend off Magen David and win their first round matchup by 3. The Falcons will now move on to face the West #2 seed Heschel. The rest of the varsity playoffs look like this:
In the East, North Shore and HAFTR finish 1 and 2 and get byes. #4 YDE and #5 DRS will faceoff to see who will play the West #1 seed Ramaz, who along with the aforementioned West #2 Heschel enjoyed first round byes. West seeds #3-5 will be determined tonight when TABC and Frisch meet in the final game of the regular season. If TABC wins, they will be the 3 seed and face #6 Kushner while #4 SAR will host Frisch in the 5th slot. If Frisch wins, SAR will host Kushner in the 3-6 game while TABC and Frisch will flip a coin to see who will host a first round game between the two in the 4/5 spot.
In JV Hockey, the final regular season games will take place tonight when Rambam battles North Shore and DRS takes on HAFTR after last week’s snow-out. Should DRS and Rambam have similar results, we will go to a coin flip to determine the East champion. Otherwise, the team that earns more points tonight will earn the crown. The champion will take on #4 Kushner, while the #2 seed will host #3 SAR. The remaining playoff matchups will be West #1 TABC hosting East #4 Flatbush while West #2 Frisch hosts East #3 HAFTR
Finally in JV Basketball, Heschel and JEC will square off tonight in their first round matchup in the Western bracket. The winner will face off against NJ division winner Frisch. In the other Western Bracket, SAR will face the winner of TABC and Ramaz. To see the complete JV Basketball bracket, please go to the NSN Court Report Fan Page on Facebook.
