Thank you Nachum.
Playoff fever has taken over the MYHSAL as all four leagues have begun post season play. JV and Varsity basketball’s second-season began last week with 2 come from behind home victories, while JV and Varsity hockey kicked off the last two days. We’ll run through the scores and update the brackets straight ahead on the JM in the AM Sports Update. Good morning everyone, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Last week, we told you about Flatbush varsity basketball’s amazing come from behind win over Magen David in first round action. This week, Flatbush’s hockey teams joined the playoff competition, first with the JV taking on TABC on Monday afternoon and the varsity taking on HANC last night. The President’s Day JV contest featured Flatbush as the East #4 seed traveling to take on the Western division champion TABC Storm. Webcasted live on TABCTV whose announcers seemed particularly transfixed on one Flatbush assistant coach for the majority of the broadcast. As for the game itself, the Storm lived up to their season billing dominating the Falcons 7-1. Daniel Levy and Shua Naor split the first four goals as Flatbush was outmanned from the start. TABC will now await the winner of East #2 DRS and West #3 SAR who play Sunday at 1 in the Greenhouse.
As for varsity, the Falcons had much greater success, knocking off the #6 HANC Hurricanes 2-0. Goals by Ben Vilinsky and Sol Sasson were enough to fuel Flatbush in the victory. Elliot Zakay recorded the shutout playing goal for the first time in years with regular net-minder Stephen Esses unavailable to play. The Falcons will now travel to take on West #2 Frisch next Thursday.
JV Basketball action featured its own come from behind victory this week as Heschel came back from 12 down to topple the lower seed JEC Thunder capping it off with a Jeremy Spiera 3- pointer at the buzzer to seal the 39-37 victory. Heschel will now take on NJ #1 Frisch. Just to note the last regular season game of the JV Basketball year, TABC spoiled Frisch’s bid at a second straight undefeated season, defeating the Cougars at home 45-44. Gavi Smith had 16 points in the victory, Shua Naor, yes the same one, finished with 18 rebounds.
In the varsity end of the double-header, the Cougars returned the favor trouncing TABC 70-59. Justin Hod tallied 27 for Frisch, including going 12 of 17 from the line, 5 of which came within the closing minutes of the game. Frisch’s win gave SAR the West 3 seed and forced a coin flip with TABC for hosting privileges when the two face this week in the West 4/5 game serving as a rubber match. TABC won the coin toss, but if the regular season is any indicator, Frisch will be mighty happy with that, as both teams won their game on the other’s courts in both meetings.
