Thanks Nachum!
We have reached the end of May, which signals the beginning of the end to the 2023-2024 school year. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a horrific week for teams East of NYC in soccer, familiar foes get set to meet up in girls varsity hockey and a dominating upset in girls softball. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start out in Varsity soccer, where it was a terrible week for the East, as neither Boys nor Girls soccer had a quarterfinal winner outside of the Western Conference. In Boys Varsity dominant wins by Frisch, Kushner and TABC eliminated HANC, North Shore and Rambam, respectively, and, in a major upset, West #4 seed Ramaz went into the Greenhouse and knocked off East champ DRS 4-3 to advance. The semifinals will see TABC host Ramaz this coming Sunday and Frisch and Kushner within the week.
The Frisch-Kushner contest will also occur between their female counterparts, as the Girls Varsity playoffs saw Frisch blank Central and Kushner dominate HAFTR. Much like in the Boys Varsity, a top HALB family team received a shocking upset as West #4 Heschel defeated East Champion SKA 6-5. They will now take on Ma’ayanot, who completed the West sweep defeating North Shore.
In Girls Hockey, the semifinals are set following SAR’s 3-2 overtime win over Heschel. The Sting will now take on Frisch in a repeat of last year’s championship, a 1-0 Double Overtime affair won by the Cougars. The two will vie for the chance to each bring home a 2nd banner in the last three years when the winner takes on the winner of Ramaz and HAFTR, taking place on Long Island this Friday afternoon.
Moving outdoors, softball has moved into the knockout stages as well. The 4 top seeds enter the postseason with a combined 3 losses between them and seem poised to compete for the crown, however, they will need to first get past their quarterfinal opponents. Top seed, undefeated Hillel will square off with 8th seed TABC on Friday with the winner taking on the winner of last night’s “Torah Bowl” between Heichal HaTorah and Netzach Hatorah. On the other side #2 Darchei Torah will host Frisch and on Wednesday MAY will travel to Brooklyn to take on Central champion, #3 YDE.
And in Girls Softball, East top seed Central found themselves on the wrong side of a major shutout, losing 10-0 to West #4 Frisch. The Cougars, the defending champs will await the winner of West #2 Bruriah and East #3 Shulamith, meanwhile West champion Hillel hopes to avoid the same fate when they play HAFTR and HANC will host Ma’ayanot to round out the quarterfinals.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
