Thanks Nachum,
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Softball is “Heat”ing up, and hockey in the spring? We have all the results from the 2025 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Hockey Tournament. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
It’s a great time to be a Hillel Heat Softball player. Hillel has seen all 3 squads, girls varsity, boys varsity and boys JV all make their respective finals. The Lady Heat, have already been crowned Queens of diamonds, as the West 3rd seed Heat followed up a stunning 3-1 win over defending champions Ma’ayanot with an 8-4 double-up of West 2nd seed Na’aleh in the finals. The win marks the schools first Softball championship since 2019. Boys Varsity will vie for the crown as the last two champions face off when the Heat meet up with Netzach HaTorah, the Knights 4-3 winners over YDE in their semifinal. Last year the 2 teams met up in the semifinal where Netzach put on a 10-3 drubbing upending Hillel en route to their championship victory. Finally, the JV defending champs will be at it again when they play against Magen David. Magen David took a 4-1 win over YDE while Hillel upended East top seed HAFTR.
Speaking of HAFTR, Cedarhurst once again played host to the Martin Weiselberg Memorial Hockey Tournament. The 2025 version, the 17th tournament saw 8 middle school teams compete this past Sunday for the last hurrah for hockey in the 2024-2025 school year. Interesting results pock-marked the day, as the first session of round-robin games saw 3 shutouts, with Noam, HALB, and HAFTR blanking Har Torah, Moriah and JEC, and Yavneh had a shutout going until the last few minutes of the 3rd, but ultimately held on to defeat HANC 3-2. In the afternoon session, craziness erupted as Har Torah took a shootout win over Moriah while Noam took the A division with a win over HALB and HANC defeated JEC while HAFTR shut out Yavneh 1-0 to wrap up the B” Division, with each division having teams tied for the second playoff spot, the tiebreak came down to two shootouts. For the “A” Division, Har Torah, who did not make their league playoffs this season outlasted NY league regular season champion HALB to oust the Lions 2-1. And in the “B” Division, it took 10 rounds, but in the end, HANC would outlast NJ regular season champion Yavneh to advance. In the semifinals, Noam took their second win over Har Torah on the day 3-0, while, in a rematch of the NY league semifinals, a similar result, as HAFTR came back to upend HANC 3-2, setting up the ever-popular battle of the two league champions to vie for the title. As was the case in the New York league championship between HAFTR and HALB, HAFTR’s speed and grinding offense went to work and struck in the first on a goal by Alex Scharaga. The goal would stand up on its own as Evan Ellenberg held down the fort in net, but Sammy Fuchs would add a marker for HAFTR late in the third to put the game away and clinch the host Hawks their first tournament crown. The Hawks’ Mark Davidman took home MVP honors with a 4-goal, 3-assist day. We continue on our fundraising path to reach $10,000 for Hatzolah.
