Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we crown our first champions of the Winter season, DRS wipes away SAR’s slate and a pair of stunning upsets set the stage for this Sunday’s hockey championships. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We start off with the first trophies given out in the major Winter Sports, as Girls Basketball crowned their queens, and the varsity Sting once again rule the hive, knocking off Frisch 51-35. Nava Bousbib topped the game scoring, dropping 20 in the championship victory, SAR’s first since 2019. While the Varsity Cougars may not have walked away with a win, not all was lost for Frisch as the JV Girls defeated Ma’ayanot 45-41, capturing their 4th consecutive Junior Varsity basketball title.
The next set of championships to be played will come this Sunday when the JV and Varsity Hockey finals will take place following a week of stunning events where the top seed in both leagues found themselves out of the running. In JV, the top seeded Frisch Cougars found themselves behind early, with TABC’s Adin Katler scoring less than 30 seconds into the contest and the 4th seeded Storm never looked back. TABC’s 4-1 win over their Route-4 rivals catapults them into the finals where they will face a familiar foe, the DRS Wildcats. This matchup has pockmarked the better part of the JV landscape over the last 15 years, with this being the 3rd time in the last 4. DRS, the East Champion and 2 seed took the regular season meeting between the two in TABC 4-1 back in December. That game will lead off the Sunday slate, tentatively set for 2PM in North Shore. Following that contest will be the Varsity final which will be without the team the vast majority thought would be there. Eliya Yizhaky’s two goals and a stifling HANC defense propelled the East 2 seed to a stunning upset over West Champion TABC 2-1. Yizhaky broke a 1-1 tie in the 2nd period and Josh Frenkel put a lock on the net, sending HANC to its first ever varsity hockey final. Their opponent this Sunday will be a familiar foe, the DRS Wildcats. The East top seed outlasted the SAR Sting 3-2. Micha Kahn’s powerplay goal with under two minutes to go was the difference-maker, sending the defending champs back to the finals. The Wildcats and Hurricanes met twice during the regular season with DRS taking both, the last a 2-1 overtime win in DRS. That contest will be the evening session in North Shore, tentatively scheduled for 6PM.
Moving back to Basketball where the semifinals are now set and the championships will be set by Sunday. DRS’s JV and Varsity squads both advanced to the semifinals with wins over SAR, completing the 4 league sweep of the Sting. The Varsity Wildcats downed SAR 61-49. Their opponent this Saturday night will be Magen David. The defending champion Warriors upset MTA 67-53. The two East teams had close matchups in the regular season, both won by DRS. On the other side of the bracket, West top seed TABC needed a massive comeback to defeat a hot Flatbush team 43-40. The Falcons gave TABC all that they could handle, but the Storm move on as the only remaining Western Conference team and will host North Shore tomorrow night. In JV, the Wildcats tore apart the Sting to advance to the semifinals where they’ll face Ramaz tonight in Ramaz. The West top seed Rams knocked off Magen David behind Emanuel Kushner’s double-double by the score of 59-35. On the other side of the bracket, tomorrow night will see Flatbush and Frisch renew pleasantries. The East Top seed Falcons defeated Hillel 64-56 while Frisch throttled the Hurricanes by 31 to reach the final 4.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
