Thanks Nachum!
President’s Week is usually a sign that Yeshiva League Playoffs are in full swing, and the majority of leagues have seen their first-round of action completed. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, TABC and Flatbush varsity squads will get real familiar with each other over the coming week, and JV Basketball provides the most drama of the first rounds. We’ll catch you up on all of the action, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Boys Varsity Hockey was a tale of two extremes in the two 4 vs 5 contests this past week. The West 4-5 game saw MTA and Kushner go down to the wire, with Kushner pulling the first upset of the post-season, downing the Lions 2-1. Kushner will now travel to face East #1 DRS in the quarters tomorrow night with the winner to meet up with the winner of tomorrow night’s battle between East #3 HAFTR and West #2 SAR. The East 4 vs 5 contest, on the other hand, was not quite as close. Down 4-2 late in the 2nd period, North Shore had a chance to make it a contest, but would see Flatbush score twice shorthanded to blow the game wide open. The Falcons would score three goals on the night while on the disadvantage, and win easily 10-3. Flatbush will travel to West #1 TABC tomorrow night. The winner of their contest will take on the winner of Saturday night’s contest when Frisch travels to HANC.
JV Hockey will see its first semifinal take place this week as DRS and SAR meet up in a rematch of last year’s JV Championship, won by SAR. The Sting took the earlier meeting this year, but DRS, the East Division champions have made strides since that game and are looking to punch their ticket back to the final. The other semifinal between Frisch and TABC will take place next week.
Ironically, Flatbush and TABC will also square off in the same predicament in the varsity basketball quarterfinals as they will in hockey. The Falcons topped YDE 56-44 and will head to North Jersey to face the West Division champions. That side of the bracket saw TABC’s rival Frisch go down to West #3 Hillel, so the Heat will head out east to meet North Shore. The final contest on week saw East #3 Magen David follow the chalk theme, downing HAFTR, prompting a meetup with the Lions of the West, MTA, in NYC. All three games are TBD. The only contest not yet determined is who will face East division champion DRS. That will be determined Thursday night when Ramaz travels north to take on SAR.
The most entertaining postseason tournament, may yet belong to JV Basketball which almost saw two 6 seeds advance to the quarterfinals. In the West, the battle of South Jersey teams saw West #6 Hillel upset #3 JEC by 5, 43-38. The upset shifts the bracket as they will now move on to face East top seed Flatbush and will leave the winner of tomorrow night’s 4-5 game between TABC and SAR to battle for the right to take on East #2 DRS. In the East, it was a close call for East #3 HANC as the Hurricanes needed to rally to force Overtime against North Shore but were able to avoid the upset taking the 55-52 win. The Hurricanes will head out to Frisch Monday night for the right to move on to the semis. Meanwhile, East #4 Magen David kept things calm, knocking off YDE 60-45. The Warriors will square off with West #1 seed Ramaz in the Quarters.
We’ll wrap up with girls basketball, where the story will be last year’s championship contestants heading into their respective semi-finialists as visitors. Defending champion Frisch will head to East champion North Shore after both teams trounced their opponents, Frisch knocking off Ramaz and North Shore dominating Kushner. Meanwhile last year’s runner-up SKA looks to take their third straight trip to the finals, but will need to get through SAR to get there. SKA cruised past Ilan 56-32 and square off with the Sting on Thursday. The two met up a little over a month ago to end off the season with the Sonics outshooting the Sting 73-67.
And in JV, Regular Season champ Maayanot defeated HAFTR 51-39 and will await winner of #2 Frisch and #3 Hillel which was postponed to tonight.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
