Thanks Nachum!
We waited an extra day for our JM in the AM Sports Update to allow the 2024-2025 winter regular season to reach its conclusion in all leagues and we were rewarded for our patience as a multitude of spots came down to the final nights. We’ll recap this crucial week and set you up for the winter postseason. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start out in varsity hockey where the top seeds were not in doubt, but each division’s 2 seed were in play down the stretch. Both were decided Monday night. In the West, SAR’s 6-0 win over Ramaz combined with Frisch’s 3-2 loss to DRS meant that the Sting claimed the 2nd bye spot while Frisch dropped to the 3 seed and will face 6th seed Ramaz. The other West matchup will see Kushner face off with MTA. In the East, the race for the 2 seed went to overtime in HAFTR and it ended with Isaac Maryles putting home the game winner for HANC to catapult the Hurricanes from the 4 seed into the 2 seed. HAFTR dropped into the 3rd spot with the loss and will face 6th seed YDE who finished their season on a sour note, taking an upset loss to Solomon Schechter 3-2. The other East matchup will see #4 Flatbush host #5 North Shore.
In JV Hockey, two of the three matchups this week set the stage for what’s to come over the next few weeks. Saturday night saw the division leaders, DRS and Frisch meet up on Long Island with the top seed in the playoffs hanging in the balance. Each team scored a goal in the first period, and then it was all the visitors. Frisch would rattle off 7 straight goals en route to a dominating 8-1 victory, securing the #1 seed and sending a message to the rest of the playoff participants, including their first round opponent which will be TABC. The Storm, who looked all but out of it halfway through the season have come back and clinched the 4 seed after a win over Rambam on Tuesday night. Frisch took both regular season meetings, including a 2-0 win a little over a month ago. The other matchup will now see DRS, the lone Eastern division participant, look to rebound against #3 SAR. The Sting represent the Wildcats’ only other loss on the season, having defeated DRS back in November.
Moving over to Varsity Basketball, where it seemed that no one in the West wanted to hold the 1 seed. TABC took their second loss of the season as Isaac Stepner’s 31 points powered Frisch past their rivals 59-57, leaving the ball in MTA’s court to wrap up the division. Unfortunately for the Lions, they could not seal the deal, dropping their finale to SAR 76-54. The loss drops them back into a tie with TABC, which the Storm held the advantage by virtue of their Thanksgiving week win over the Lions. Both will still earn byes, while Hillel earned the 3 seed and will face Frisch who drop to 6th due to a tiebreaker loss to Ramaz by 1 point in margin of victory meaning the Rams at 5 will travel to #4 SAR. Out East, not as much intrigue as DRS and North Shore already had the 1 and 2 wrapped up and YDE and HAFTR stuck in the 5 and 6 seeds. However, in a matchup for the 3rd seed, Magen David knocked off rival Flatbush 50-43 and will earn the higher seed and a first-round game with HAFTR, while Flatbush will host YDE.
Finally, in JV Basketball, much like varsity hockey, the 2 seed was up in the air with the possibility of a 4-way tie out West. The Ramaz Rams, however, had other ideas and knocked off MTA to up their record to 8-2 and take the top spot in the division. However, Frisch, JEC and TABC all ended up in a tie at 7-3. The tiebreak would fall out in that order, with Frisch earning the 2nd bye and JEC and TABC hosting first round games. #3 JEC will host #6 Hillel while #4 TABC will meet up with #5 SAR. In the East, DRS slid into the 2 seed behind Flatbush with a win over North Shore knocking HANC into the 3 seed where they will next face #6 North Shore. The 4 vs 5 matchup will see Magen David hosting YDE.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
