Thanks Nachum!
Week two of the playoffs are in the books, and as expected, the home teams finally showed up. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, all but one home team were victorious this past week, Varsity Basketball champions made it 3 in a row, Ohr Yisroel celebrates their first playoff win, and in Varsity Hockey the 2 seeds deep-six the competition. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
We’ll start out in Varsity Basketball where the defending champs are still alive. The North Shore Lions clinched their way into the postseason with two must-wins over the DRS Wildcats to end the regular season, and last Thursday, they made it number 3. The Lions started off hot outshooting the Wildcats and really never allowed it to be a contest, knocking off the 5 seed 75-55 behind Jonah Carmili’s 30 points, including 7 from behind the arc. The Stars will now await tonight’s contest between East #3 HAFTR and #6 Waterbury to see whether they will play TABC or Ramaz in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the river, Ohr Yisroel, the West 5 seed took home their first playoff win, defeating Heschel 47-37 in Heschel. Ohr Yisroel will now play East #2 Flatbush as the West has officially advanced it’s 5th and 6th seeds with SAR going to play Magen David.
JV Basketball East has completed its first round with the top seeds advancing to the Quarterfinals. A close game early on, #3 Flatbush dominated the second half in a 52-19 victory over YDE, while the only non-Brooklyn East first round team, HAFTR knocked off #5 Magen David 52-43. Flatbush will play West #2 SAR tomorrow night while HAFTR and Frisch work out their matchup. The West will have its round completed this week as JEC and Hillel will have their rescheduled match tonight in Deal and Ramaz and TABC will tangle in Teaneck tomorrow.
In Girls varsity basketball, the final piece of the semis was filled in as Frisch defeated HAFTR 79-30. The West top seed will now host #3 Maayanot next Monday night in the semis with the hopes of another finals visit. Hoping for the same on the other side will be defending champion SKA taking on North Shore next Tuesday.
Finally, we wrap up with Varsity Hockey where both #2 seeds are semi-bound. Eliya Yizhaky’s hat trick has HANC back in the semifinals after the Hurricanes knocked off Kushner 7-1. They will now await the winner of West top seed TABC and West #5 SAR taking place Thursday. On the other side of the bracket Frisch manhandled HAFTR 8-2 to advance where they will now await the winner of East top seed DRS and Rambam, which takes place tomorrow night.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
