Thanks Nachum!
Chag Sameach and Happy Channukah everyone! Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we recap two of the Yeshiva League’s best rivalries as Magen David and Flatbush meet up in Varsity Basketball and TABC and Frisch squared off in Varsity Hockey. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
It’s barely mid-December, but already Flatbush- Magen David has cemented itself as the hottest ticket in Varsity Basketball. The two squared off in the championships of the Magen David and Cooper preseason tournaments, resulting in splits. The squads met up for the first time in regular season action this past Saturday night in Flatbush. Magen David held a 3-point lead entering the fourth quarter and would pull away at the line, running up a 20-5 spread in the final frame for a 57-39 victory. Josh Chabbot led all scorers with 15 for the Warriors who now lead the East at 7-1 after knocking Flatbush from the ranks of the undefeated. Both teams have a two game lead on 3rd place HAFTR after the Hawks dropped two on the week, including a 65-59 decision to Ramaz that same night. Milan Kushner dropped 20 to pace the Rams who now have the league’s best record at 8-1. The other HAFTR loss on the week saw defending champion North Shore take its second win on the season, a 54-29 result. North Shore now sits at 2-4, and looks to climb back into the race near the top when they square off with Flatbush tonight in North Shore. In other action, Frisch dropped MTA to keep pace with Ramaz and Ohr Yisroel pulls above .500 with a 58-47 win over Heschel.
In JV Basketball, Frisch now joins Hillel, Ramaz and SAR atop the West after a 64-54 win over the Rams and Hillel’s thrashing of Heschel. All 4 teams sit at 4 wins with Hillel and SAR at 0 losses, Frisch at 1 and Ramaz now at 2. And in the East, after losing two of their first three to start the season, Flatbush has put together a solid December, taking 4 wins in 10 days to jump to 5-2. The Falcons took wins over Brooklyn foes Barkai and Magen David and avenged an early-season loss to YDE with a 15 point win on Thursday night.
Varsity Hockey’s version of rivalry week saw the second leg of the Route 4 Rivalry take place in TABC on Tuesday night. This meeting wound up being nothing like the first contest which saw Frisch take a 1-goal victory over the visiting Storm. Instead, TABC took out their frustrations on the Cougar net, shelling Frisch 8-3. TABC now sits alone at 7-1 awaiting SAR whom they play next Thursday. SAR currently sits in 2nd place at 6-2, but with two contests in between, including one against Frisch, the gap between TABC and the rest of the league could be massive by the time the ball drops on that contest. In other action, DRS and HANC stayed perfect in the east, downing North Shore and Magen David and Kushner pulls above .500 at 5-4 following a 7-5 win over Flatbush, the Falcons 2nd straight loss by that score. Kushner sits four points clear of MTA for the 4th spot in the West, while Flatbush now sits in a three-way tie with YDE and Magen David for the 5th spot in the East. That deadlock will be broken tonight as the Falcons and Thunder meet up in YDE.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
