Thanks Nachum!
Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Saracheck Tournament caps off our Winter Sports coverage. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Twenty-four teams converged on Yeshiva University this past weekend to vie for one of the three tier championships at the 2023 Red Saracheck Memorial Basketball Tournament. Eight Yeshiva League teams were among the participants including last week’s League championship combatants North Shore and Frisch. Unfortunately for both teams, neither would reach the final, however, the league was well-represented on Championship Monday. In the Tier III Championship, JEC upended Kohelet 52-42. The Thunder shook off a Day 1 loss to Fuchs Mizrachi to take victories over Maimo and Mesivta of Greater Philadelphia to reach the final. Yosef Heller took home the MVP for the Tier.
Tier II saw DRS fall to that same Fuchs Mizrachi team. DRS found itself in Tier two following a qualifier loss to Magen David to begin the tournament. DRS defeated RASG and Berman, but could not overcome the Mayhem, who also took out TABC on their road to the final. The 53-39 victory by the 14th seed over the Wildcats was set in motion early with a 22-4 first quarter stretch that allowed Fuchs to coast the rest of the way.
The Main event of the tournament, however, was the Tier 1 final, which saw 2nd seed Valley Torah take on 5th seed SAR. The Sting earned their way to Championship Monday by knocking off the tournament top seed Shalhevet in a stunner on semifinal Sunday 57-55 behind 23 points from Akiva Shanzer. Valley Torah punched their ticket by defeating Cali rival YULA by 10. The Sting rolled out to a 16-6 lead, but the Wolfpack were resilient, chipping away and closing the gap to 1 at the half 31-30. The second half was all Valley as the Wolfpack rode 17 points from Johnny Dan to their second straight Tier 1 championship.
With Saracheck drawing to a close, so too does the 2022-2023 winter sports season. Tune in after the Pesach holiday for soccer, boys volleyball, girls hockey, softball and baseball as the JM in the AM Sports Update turns the focus to the Spring.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg!
