This Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated to the memory of my father Marty, Avraham Menashe Ben Dov Be’er HaLevi on his 16th Yahrtzeit.
The playoffs have arrived and boy have they produced fireworks. We’ll take you through all of the week’s postseason action straight ahead on this Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg
Varsity Hockey starts us off with two major upsets. Last night saw West #4 SAR upend East #1 DRS on the road 4-2. Junior Gabriel Hornblass paced the Sting with 2 goals in the victory. The win for the Sting avenges a regular season embarrassment at home and will mark the third time in the last 4 varsity hockey playoffs that one of the #1 seeds did not reach the varsity semifinals and the first time that a #4 seed has defeated a #1 seed since the 2017-2018 season, when West #4 Frisch defeated East #1 DRS. Speaking of which, the Sting will now advance to play Frisch in Frisch following the Cougars decimation of Magen David. Frisch and SAR each split the season series with home victories. As we speak about that 2017-2018 postseason, this will be the first time that the two have faced in the post-season since the championship game of that playoff season. On the other side of the bracket, though not a seeding upset, a ranking upset nonetheless. East #2 HANC behind the stellar play of Junior goalie Joey Diamond defeated West #3 MTA 2-1. The Hurricanes will travel to TABC who have already had to deal with solid goaltending in their 5-0 win over East #4 Rambam that was 0-0 for the majority of the first two periods in Senior goalie Sam Korman’s final game as a Rambam Raven.
Unlike Varsity, JV Hockey went a little more “by-the-numbers” as both 2 seeds defeated the 3 seeds to advance. Continuing the goalie theme, East #2 HAFTR defeated West #3 Frisch 3-0 behind a shutout from Hawk goalie freshman Max Newmark. On the other side West #2 Kushner avenged an early season loss to Rambam, knocking off the Ravens in Kushner by the score of 4-2. As a result, each will travel to the opposing division’s #1 seed, for Kushner, that would be DRS and for HAFTR, that will be TABC. That game will be next Tuesday night.
Varsity Basketball has ¾ of its quarterfinals set with an upset to note as well. East #5 YDE upended East #4 Waterbury in Overtime 53-50. YDE will advance to play West #1 SAR, date and time to be determined. The other two matchups saw the favorites advance as East #3 Magen David won the battle of the Magens defeating East #6 Magen Abraham by 19. The Warriors will take on West #2 Ramaz on Monday. In the West, #3 TABC defeated #6 Hillel 40-30 to advance to face East #2 Flatbush. East #1 DRS will await the winner of the remaining First round contest between West #4 Frisch and #5 MTA.
JV Basketball’s post-season will get a boost tonight as Ramaz and North Shore and Flatbush and SAR will face off in the quarterfinals. SAR advanced to the Quarters after defeating JEC in the West play-in game 52-37. The only quarterfinal contest that has been played saw West #1 Frisch throttle DRS 81-52. Frisch will advance to play the winner of the only Quarterfinal contest remaining after tonight, which will see East #2 Magen David host West #3 TABC on Thursday night.
