Thanks Nachum!
Playoff time is back in the MYHSAL. The Spring sports are ready for the postseason as soccer’s brackets are set, hockey and volleyball are mostly there, but softball still has quite a bit left to be determined. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Kushner wraps up the top seed in girls varsity hockey, Hillel completes a perfect regular season in boys softball, and complete coverage of the soccer postseason. All that and more, straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start off in girls hockey where the Kushner Cobras have clinched the top seed in the Western Conference and the top spot overall in the upcoming postseason, taking their 7th win last night over the Heschel Heat, 1-0. A goal in the early moments of the game by freshman Hannah Nussbaum, was all the offense on the night. For Nussbaum, it was goal number 17 and for Kushner it was points 13 and 14 putting them out of reach of defending champion Frisch ahead of their meeting tomorrow night. The Cougars will take the 2nd seed in the West. Heschel still has a shot at the West 3rd seed, but will need to defeat SAR, the top seed in the East this coming Thursday to do so. Otherwise Ma’ayanot will be the3 and Heschel, the 4. Should that be the case, Heschel will be back in SAR for their first round matchup when the playoffs begin.
All 4 soccer leagues are ready to roll on their postseason tournaments. Three of the four boys varsity matchups will happen tonight. Eastern Division champion DRS will host SAR, Western division champion and top seed TABC will host #8 Kushner and 4th seeded HANC will host 5th seeded Flatbush. MTA and HAFTR will round out the first-round on Thursday. In Girls Varsity, three games will be played tonight as well. Central hosts Hillel, Flatbush takes on North Shore and SKA hosts Kushner. The other matchup, between Ma’ayanot and SAR took place last night with the Rapids trouncing the Sting, 7-0, to continue their perfect stretch this year. Boys JV will see Flatbush at Frisch tonight with the winner facing Magen David in the semis and in the other bracket, TABC and DRS square off in a rematch of last year’s JV final on Thursday with the winner taking on North Shore in the next round. Girls JV begins tomorrow night with Kushner at Ma’ayanot and next week with North Shore at Frisch.
Softball is working its way toward the postseason but still has a bit of time before playoff play begins. However, one boys varsity team is already looking ahead to the tournament, as the Hillel Heat have wrapped up their schedule and remain perfect, taking a doubleheader with a 4-2 win over Frisch and a 6-0 win over TABC on Sunday for wins 7 and 8 on the year. Hillel will now wait to see who joins them in the “second-season.” Currently, YDE leads the Central at 5-0 and DRS has a leg-up in the East at 4-1, but Rambam and MAY are on their heels with only 1 loss as well. Rambam and DRS square off in a doubleheader this coming Friday.
