Thanks Nachum,
Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, the Spring season is upon us…but wait…the Esther Semmelman Memorial Hockey All Star Day extends Winter by just a bit. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The last bit of the Winter season closed itself out this past Sunday at the 4th Annual iShine/ Esther Semmelman Memorial All-Star Day in TABC. In the Junior High contest, the HAYMISH New Jersey League upended the New York MYJHHL League on two goals by game MVP Yavneh’s Ian Bromberg. On the High School front, the East would take the JV game 2-0 behind stellar goaltending of Co-MVPs HAFTR’s Ben Horowitz and DRS’ Akiva Aryeh and in a classic, the Varsity game would go to double overtime before game MVP Gordie Kolb buried the winner for the 3-2 West victory.
With the winter season sports all wrapped up, the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, will now turn the calendar page for its second consecutive year of Spring sports coverage. This will include Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Softball, Boys Baseball, Girls Hockey and Boys Volleyball.
In Girls Hockey, SAR has thrust themselves ahead of the pack in the East, winning their first 4 games, all over conference opponents. Their latest victory, a 6-1 win over HAFTR this past Sunday, has already put them on the verge of clinching a playoff spot in the sport’s 8-game season. The West has not fully jumped into gear yet, but Ramaz’s 3-2 record lands it in first place, with Kushner and two-time defending champion Frisch lurking behind at 2-0.
In Boys volleyball, defending champion DRS went into last night leading the league at 4-1 taking 3 games in 4 nights last week over Solomon Schechter, Ramaz and HAFTR. However, their 3 game win streak came to an end at the hand of one of three remaining undefeated teams, Frisch, by the score of 3 games to 0. Frisch now sits at 3-0, a win behind the Wildcats on the standings board.
In Boys Varsity soccer, TABC, MTA, DRS and defending champion HANC have all jumped out to lead or tie to lead their respective divisions with TABC and MTA leading the West and Central and DRS and HANC tied for the lead in the East at 4-0. The league is shaping up to be extremely competitive, as 10 of the 21 teams have recorded at least 3 wins in their first 5 games.
Boys JV Soccer sees Magen David, North Shore and TABC ahead in their respective divisions, all at a record of 4-0 following TABC’s 8-3 win over Frisch and North Shore’s 3-1 win over Rambam last night.
In Girls Varsity Soccer, Maayanot and Central are angling early for a championship rematch as both teams sit at or near the top of West and East divisions with records of 4-0. In the East, SKA currently holds the top spot in points, but has played two more games than Central. In JV, Maayanot leads the league at 5-0, but Frisch, at 3-0 is not too far behind.
The Baseball and Softball leagues are only just getting underway. We will have more information on them in the coming weeks.
The Pesach Holiday will take knock out the next two Tuesdays, so stay tuned to JM in the AM over the coming weeks to hear when our next Sports Update will be.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg. Chag sameach everyone!
