Thanks Nachum,
I’m going to be honest. I’m tired. I’m exhausted. I’m drained physically, mentally and emotionally, and I have Yeshiva League Hockey to thank for it. Last night was a roller coaster ride in playoff action with one major upset and two games that went longer than 36 minutes, one of which is now a candidate for the longest game ever in Yeshiva League History. On the basketball side of things, the quarterfinals wrap up with a major upset. And just to be clear about those upsets, not a great week in Bergen County Varsity Sports. All that and more straight ahead on your Tuesday Morning Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Well, after getting home at 12:30 from the HAFTR-SAR hockey game last night, putting together the Court Report for tonight’s NEW episode at 7PM on the Stream, and not getting to sleep until roughly 3:30 in the morning, I’m here with you on JM in the AM because last night’s action was just too amazing to NOT share, and no amount of lack of sleep was going to keep me from it.
Last night, this game may have set a new record for the longest Yeshiva League game ever, going into 4 overtimes tied 1-1 until HAFTR’s Gilad Kerstein slammed home the game winner with just under 8 minutes left in the 7th period played on the night. Goals by SAR’s Daniel Best and HAFTR’s Jake Berger got us to that point, but those goals happened roughly 3 hours and many heart attacks prior. The Hawks will now get the opportunity to defend their crown against, shockingly, the team they beat last year, the DRS Wildcats! Yes folks, upset city last night, TABC, the most dominant team of the year, the previously undefeated Storm fell to DRS 4-1 in the semifinals. This showdown will be the second game of the Championship double-header this coming Sunday in Lawrence Middle School.
The action will kick off at 1:30PM with the JV Championship between SAR and Rambam. The Ravens advanced last night, but not before a little lengthy drama of their own, defeating Frisch in, just one overtime, also by the score of 2-1 on a goal by Daniel Yizhaky. Tune in to tonight’s episode of the Court Report where I will go in depth on all three of these games and break down what to expect this coming Sunday afternoon.
Hockey wasn’t the only heartbreak suffered at TABC this week. The varsity basketball team felt the agony of defeat as well. Facing North Shore, for the second year in a row in the quarters, the Storm looked well on their way to avenging last year’s crushing defeat, where they came back from 21 down to tie the game only to lose it on free throws in the waning seconds. In this game, the Storm held an 11 point lead, only to see the Stars come back and win by an 11 point margin of their own 57-46. North Shore will now meet up with HAFTR in the varsity semis with the winner meeting up with the victor in the other semifinal match between DRS and Frisch. The Cougars and Wildcats will square off tonight in Frisch at 8:30
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update. Nachum, I know you’re a TABC fan, please don’t fire me, I’m only the messenger.
