Thanks Nachum,
First of all, thank you to all of the well-wishers who contacted me after my show Sunday night to make sure I was ok. I am now 100% better and hopefully sound that way. With that out of the way, the 2014-2015 Yeshiva League Playoffs are upon us! First-round action has begun in all leagues and we’ll give you a recap of all of the action from the first week of the post-season, all ahead on your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Let’s start off in Varsity basketball where three of the four first round games were played. Both Heat teams advanced with wins, as Heschel rode Sam Lippman’s 19 points and Sam Schwartzben’s 16 points to a 56-42 win over JEC and Hillel downed Ramaz 48-45 despite the Rams erasing a 10 point 4th quarter deficit behind four straight Sammy Merkin 3 pointers. Heschel will advance to take on East #2 DRS, while Hillel will now travel to East #1 HAFTR for their second round matchup. In the East, Magen David upset YDE in grand fashion, upending their Brooklyn foes 66-45. They await the other first round match between HANC and North Shore to determine their next opponent.
In JV Basketball, only one game played, that being TABC upsetting Ramaz 53-48 to clear out both Rams basketball teams from the 2014-2015 post-season. The other West game, MTA-JEC will take place tomorrow night in MTA. Both East games, Rambam at North Shore and HANC at DRS will take place tonight.
In Varsity hockey, the MTA Lions dispatched of the Rambam Ravens 6-0 in the first preliminary round game. They will advance to play HAFTR. The other preliminary round game between Ramaz and North Shore will take place tonight in North Shore. The winner will advance to take on West Champion TABC tomorrow night in TABC.
In JV Hockey, HANC rolled over MTA in the first preliminary game 4-1 behind two goals by Jacob Schwartzman to advance to the second-round where they will meet SAR in a rare JV-Varsity double-header playoff game between the two schools next week. The other preliminary game between HAFTR and JEC will take place tonight in Elizabeth. The winner of that game will advance to play Rambam. The winner of the SAR-HANC game will play DRS, after the Wildcats brought TABC’s six consecutive championship-winning streak to an end last Thursday 4-0 with 2 goals from Shlomo Mansbach and a shutout by freshman netminder Jakey Friedman.
