Coming up on Tuesday Morning’s JM in the AM Sports Update, Flatbush and North Shore meet in quadruple-header basketball action, and HANC varsity hockey does it again…but what exactly is “it?” Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The HANC Hurricanes varsity hockey team faced off against Western powerhouse, SAR Sting, in Uniondale this pastSunday. Coming in to this game, the Hurricanes had not lost a game in regulation on their home court, only losing to DRS in Overtime in their 5 games at home. SAR, at 7-2 came in looking to put distance between itself and Kushner in the race for one of the top spots in the Western division. Neither team was able to break through in the first, but the second proved to be the key for the home team. In a span of 3 minutes, the Hurricanes were able to amass a two goal lead on markers by Matthew Rosenberg and Ezra Kushner. HANC was able to carry the two-goal lead for most of the period, but could not keep the Sting off the board as Sam Schwalbe slammed home an SAR goal with just under two minutes to go in the period. HANC looked to be in control until halfway through the third when the Hurricanes found themselves down a man, and out of luck, as SAR turned a powerplay into the game tying goal, and for the fourth time this year and third time at home, the Hurricanes would play an extra session. In three overtime games this year, HANC has been 2-1, having defeated Rambam and Flatbush, both with game-winners coming off the stick of Josh Wengrofsky, in both instances completing hat tricks. In this one, Wengrofsky would get the opportunity once again. Following HANC killing off three minutes of 3 on 2 action, after taking two consecutive penalties, Wengrofsky found himself breaking in all alone on the SAR net, only to have Gil Fortgang make a toe save denying Wengrofsky’s third game winner and keeping HANC’s streak of not winning games where Wengrofsky does not score, alive as the game would end in a 2-2 tie.
Flatbush would be the scene of a massive Sunday of basketball action as the Falcons and North Shore Stars went toe-to-toe for four straight contests on the hardwood. In the morning session the teams would split as North Shore would take the JV game with Flatbush winning the Varsity matchup. In the afternoon session, the boys took the floor. The more anticipated matchup came first with the JV squads doing battle. Flatbush entering the game undefeated and North Shore having only lost their first game to HAFTR a few days prior. The first half was a back-and-forth affair with the two teams knotted at 22 at the mid-way point, but in the third, the Falcons went on a run with the Falcons’ Abie Rosow scoring 11 of his game high 29 points on the day to push open a double digit lead heading to a 52-41 Flatbush victory.
In the last game of the day, the Varsity battle, under a minute to go in the ball game, North Shore up 30-27, Bobby Soffer drains a long three with 5 ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 30. That 5 seconds would be enough for the Stars however, as on the inbounds the ball found its way to Josh Hecht for a jumper from 10 feet out to win the game at the buzzer, giving North Shore its league-high 9th win of the year.
Just a reminder, that Flatbush squad will square off with HAFTR this coming Sunday night at 7pm at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn as part of a full four-game slate in the College Basketball Winter Festival starting at noon. Tickets for the full day of games are on sale through both schools and are extremely reasonably priced with one ticket being good enough for entry to all games. Please contact the schools directly for more information.
