Thank you Nachum! This Week on JM in AM’s Tuesday Morning Sports Update, TABC tops Kushner in a huge Thursday of Varsity hockey action and in Varsity Basketball, Surprising Sting Shock Stars. Good Morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg
In varsity basketball, SAR and North Shore met up in SAR this past Wednesday. The game started out as a real defensive battle with the score at the half only 16-13 with SAR ahead. NS would erase a 4 point deficit and take the lead 22-21 with 1:42 left in the 3rdquarter, but Josh Blustein, nailed his third three of the night to put the Sting back up 24-22. For the start of the 4th, the game was a 1 or 2 point SAR lead with NS always within a bucket of taking over, but with 5:47 left, Blustein drained another long bomb for his 12th point on the night. On the next possession Michah Levy took the ball to the hole and drained a banker off the square to put SAR up 6, 31-25. Under a minute to go, SAR up 31-27, Cody Cohen hit 2 of four free throws on consecutive possessions to cut the lead to 2 and with 42 seconds left we had a one possession game. SAR got the ball at mid-court with 35 seconds remaining and with deft passing, the Sting were able to work the ball to Rafi Kubersky through the back door to put SAR back up four. Icing the game. The Final Score: SAR 33 North Shore 31.
Other varsity hoops scores: DRS and HAFTR stay undefeated in the East dropping YDE and HANC respectively, and Ramaz avenges an early season loss to MTA, defeating the Lions by 20.
In JV Basketball, Ramaz upset TABC 60-59 on Thursday night and Flatbush wins the 2014 Thomas Hausdorf Memorial Basketball Tournament.
Moving over to Hockey
Thursday night featured four games with major implications. In the battle for the top of the West, Kushner and TABC squared off. Two minutes into the game, Storm defenseman Aryeh Berman put one home with a shot that glanced off of Kushner goalie Jack Reiz and into the net. Two minutes later, Daniel Levy would thread a pass between his legs to Yair Knoller cutting across the middle who put it top shelf and TABC was off to the races. Ari Fuchs would add another before the end of the first and another only 30 seconds into the second period. The next three goals would all belong to Alex Malach, two of which came on lasers on the powerplay on what would be a 4-point performance on the night. Knoller would cap off the scoring for the Storm, giving him 2 goals, two assists. Ilan Slonim would put Kushner on the board before Knoller’s final tally to make it 7-1 but that would be all the offense the Cobras could muster as TABC throttled them 8-1 to keep their record spotless.
Other scores from that Thursday night: MTA blanked HANC 7-0, SAR shutout JEC 5-0 and Ramaz surprised Frisch on the road 4-1.
In JV Hockey, Rambam and SAR follow up their Battle of the undefeated victories with huge victories. Rambam topped HAFTR 4-2 at home and SAR downed TABC 5-1 in TABC.
