Straight ahead on your Tuesday morning JM in the AM Sports Update, it seems very much like a Cougar day as Frisch is the topic of conversation today. Frisch and Kushner take center court in varsity hockey . On the basketball end of things, two Western powerhouses, Frisch and Ramaz meet up in regular season action, while Frisch also participates in the Emunah/Rubenstein Tournament. Good Morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Coming off a bizarre week for Frisch hockey where they played a game and yet still didn’t play a game, the Cougars rolled into Kushner Monday night to face the 6-0-0-1 Cobras, still smarting from an Overtime loss to Ramaz last week. Frisch would open up the scoring early with Rafi Selevan netting a Power Play goal in the first. Second period, Kushner pushes out ahead on goals by Louis Reiz and Alec Rabinowitz. Ilan Slonim would peg one in off the post in the third to put the Cobras up 3-1, but Frisch would not stay down. Ten seconds after Slonim’s goal, Odi Haramati cut the lead to 3-2 and only moments later, Michael Reinhart evened up the game. Fast forward to 2 minutes left in the third, Frisch clears the ball into the Kushner zone, ball takes a bounce off of the boards and right onto the stick of Stevie Brinn who put it home to give Frisch a 4-3 lead. Clock winding down, Reiz knocks home his second of the game in front on a controversial goal and in overtime it would be Reiz again, hustling to block a Frisch clear attempt that would glance off his leg and sail into the Frisch net for the 5-4 final. Reiz would finish with a hat trick, his second in a row and third on the season. Kushner is now 7-0-0-1 as it prepares for a showdown with TABC in the Weather Center next Thursday night.
In other varsity action, Flatbush comes up short against HANC Sunday, losing 4-3 in overtime, also after being down by a 3-1 margin. Josh Wengrofsky netted a hatty for the Canes in the win, including the OT winner, his second on the year. Ben Vilinsky paced Flatbush with 2 in the loss.
On the JV end of things, Flatbush would emerge victorious against their HANC counterparts, 2-1 with all three of the game’s goals coming in the second period. Netanel Nemet led the Falcon charge with the game winning goal and an assist on the game-tying goal to Sam Laniado while Shorthanded.
On to basketball, Frisch and Ramaz played in a thriller, with the Cougars pulling out a 60-59 victory over the Rams, the win leaves Frisch as the only undefeated team in the Varsity West Division.
At the same time, the Cougars also participated in the Emunah/Rubenstein tournament. A 10-team tournament with a unique advancement system. Frisch advanced to the finals defeating SAR 53-25 and HANC 59-38. HANC, it should be noted defeated Magen David 70-63 in a five overtime affair in their first round game. As for their finals opponent, that will be Flatbush, who made the finals despite only winning one game! After losing their first-round game to Heschel, the tie-break fell in Flatbush’s favor to earn them the 6th and final quarterfinal berth and despite falling to TABC in the quarters 44-38, Flatbush would again advance on tiebreak where they would rematch with the Storm and drop TABC 27-25. Flatbush and Frisch will meet in the finals at some point to be determined in the future.
