Every Tuesday morning at 7:20 ET Nachum Segal presents Elliot Weiselberg on JM in the AM to deliver the Yeshiva League Sports (YLS) Update. This week, however, due to Nachum’s coverage of the massacre in Jerusalem, and accompanying somber programming, the YLS Update was presented today (Wednesday) instead. Spread the word and tune in for the latest Yeshiva League hockey and basketball information, as well as, the occasional update on other sports happenings in the Jewish world. For a deeper look at Yeshiva Sports check out Court Report, also hosted by Elliot, on Sunday evenings at 7:00pm ET (replay on Tuesdays from 7-8pm ET). You can read the entire transcript of this morning’s update below.
Thank you Nachum. Straight ahead on The JM in the AM Sports Update, a special Wednesday version to include the third installment of what has now become an extremely compelling basketball rivalry between North Shore and HAFTR, and a good old western division battle between SAR and Frisch in Riverdale last week. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
In an early season matchup between two west division teams fighting for position at the top of the West leaderboard, Frisch and SAR met up in Riverdale in the first of two meetings on the season. Both teams entered the game at 2-0, with Frisch holding an impressive 3-2 victory over DRS in their last matchup. The Cougars carried that momentum into the opening period at the rink in SAR, with senior offenseman Rafi Selevan getting Frisch on the board first. With time winding down in the first, SAR would tie the game up when junior defenseman Azi Lavi picked off a pass at the line and sent a rifle top-shelf closing out the period at 1-1. The Sting would carry the bulk of the play out of the break and with3:12 remaining in the middle session, SAR on a power play, senior offenseman Jacob Ungar would capitalize on the man-advantage to give the Sting a 2-1 lead. But Frisch would not go away, and 3 minutes into the third, a Tzvi Bessler shot tied up the game for Frisch to force overtime. In the extra session, the Sting buzzed the net and it paid off as Ungar would smack home the game winner in front of the net to give SAR the 3-2 win.
In other varsity hockey news, Kushner holds down Rambam 3-1 and HANC defeats Magen David 5-3.
Speaking of Magen David, the JV Warriors pull off a huge come from behind victory Monday night, coming back from 4-1 down with 8 minutes left in the game to stun North Shore 5-4 in OT to give them their 2nd OT win of the season.
Moving over to basketball, a week removed from the finals of the Cooper Memphis Invitational Basketball Tournament, the HAFTR Hawks and the North Shore Stars met for the first official regular season matchup, despite having met twice already this year. In the finals of the Magen David Tournament, HAFTR was victorious by 1. At the Cooper Tournament Championship, the Hawks walked away with a 4 point victory. Unfortunately, for North Shore, the trend would continue as HAFTR took the first of two regular season matchups, winning by 7, 53-46. Abie Perlow dropped 20 points in another dominating night for HAFTR, Cody Cohen would lead the Stars in the loss.
Speaking of North Shore, a Mazal Tov goes out to former North Shore head basketball coach, and current YU Macs men’s basketball coach Elliot Steinmetz on the teams first and second victories of the season. With a squad that features nine former Yeshiva League participants, including former HANC star Benjy Ritholtz and HAFTR phenom Shelby Rosenberg, the Macs downed Gallaudet University in overtime 73-72 this past Sunday and Hunter College last night 82-73.
For more Yeshiva League action, tune in to the Court Report this Sunday at 7PM on the Nachum Segal Network, Nachumsegal.com. This past week we had part one of our conversation with Cooper Tournament Director Josh Kahane. This week, in a special half-our episode, we will air part two, in which we discuss the moment that catapulted the tournament into the phenomenon that it is today.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
