Thanks Nachum,
Another Monday, another snowfall, but this time, we laughed back as Yeshiva League Playoffs got underway last night. We’ll give you the rundown of playoff action occurring this week and we’ll touch upon the last week of the 2014-2015 Regular Season. With your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The regular season wrapped up last week with each league featuring massive showdowns to close out the stretch. In Varsity hockey, DRS and TABC fought to a 3-3 tie. Yair Knoller scored twice for the Storm with Shua Naor netting one of his own. Leo Rubin, Zach Fuchs and Yehudah Simon posted goals for the Wildcats.
In JV Hockey, HAFTR on their last legs, went down early, allowing Flatbush to build a 3-1 lead and put the Hawks on the verge of missing the playoffs before Jakob Kramer put HAFTR on his back scoring a hat trick to lead his team into the post season with a 5-3 win. The victory hops HAFTR over North Shore into the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
HANC and MTA kicked off the playoff schedule with their JV Hockey play-in game, with the West #5 seeded Lions traveling to battle the East #4 seed Hurricanes. HANC battered the MTA net, but could only take a 2-0 lead out of the first on goals by Maury Bauer and Jacob Schwartzman. MTA would cut the lead to one on a Zach Borgen snapper in the 2nd, but would be on the raw end of tallies by HANC’s Joseph Lindenblatt and another goal by Jacob Schwartzman to cap the scoring at 4-1 HANC. The win sends the Hurricanes on to face the West #1 seed, SAR, the same opponent that their varsity counterparts will play, most probably on the same night.
In other hockey playoff action. DRS and TABC will play the East #2- West #3 game this Thursday night. Over in Varsity MTA and Rambam will play their play in-game on Thursday as well and next week, Ramaz and North Shore will meet up in their play-in game.
In Basketball Heschel Varsity needed double OT to knock off TABC to earn the third seed in the West. The Storm made a furious 2nd half comeback, after being down 14 at the break, behind 23 points from Moshe Brum and a Dan Poleyoff three-pointer with 6 seconds left in regulation. In the 2nd Overtime, Heschel gained a three point edge and rode it to a 65-62 final. Heschel varsity will play their first round game tonight as they face JEC.
Over in JV, Heschel was not as lucky, falling to the Storm by 12. That coupled with JEC’s win over Hillel eliminates Heschel from playoff contention. TABC JV will face Ramaz on Thursday night.
