Well folks, that special time of the year is finally here, yes, the postseason is upon us, but not without a last week of the season filled with several action packed contests to whet our appetite for the next five weeks of competitive hard fought action. On today’s edition of the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, we recap the very best of the last week of the 2015-2016regular season . Good Morning I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Varsity basketball finished its season with over 20 games, including several games that would directly impact playoff seedings for both teams. The two most anticipated games on the week, however, would not be any of those matchups. Out West, the two top seeds in playoffs, Heschel and Frisch squared off for the second time this season. Heschel the top seed in the West would keep its run at an undefeated season alive, knocking off the 2nd seeded Cougars to complete the 14-0 regular season by the score of 49-41. Heschel’s Ben Brandeis and Frisch’s Andrew Langer led the game with 18 points each. The result of this game would not affect the playoff picture in the West. On the other hand, the East held its own similar contest as 13-0 DRS battled HAFTR for the fourth time this season. Much like the other three, DRS was able to come away victorious 58-46 on the back of Gabriel Leifer’s 31 points to also keep their undefeated season going. Unlike for the other three teams though, the HAFTR loss could prove to be very costly in terms of seeding, depending on the result of Flatbush’s games this past week. Would the Hawks luck out with a Flatbush stumble or has this loss cost HAFTR a coveted bye slot? Tune in to tonight’s all new episode of the Court Report on the Nachum Segal Network to find out.
In JV Basketball, HANC defeated Shaare Torah 54-22 to finish its season at 7-3 and grab the last first round home game spot in the East as the #4 seed. The Hurricanes will take on #5 Derech Hatorah, an interesting matchup, as it is the only one of the four first round games where the home team did not defeat the away team in the regular season.
Varsity and JV Hockey completed their seasons as well. JV Hockey’s eight playoff teams worked out their seeding with wins by DRS and Frisch catapulting themselves into the 1 and 2 spots completing undefeated seasons with wins over HAFTR and SAR respectively. Despite both teams being undefeated, this one was not determined by a coin flip but by a new tiebreak format instituted this very season. To find out about the new system and its effect on the playoff proceedings, tune in tonight and I’ll break it all down for you.
Finally, in a game that was hopefully a harbinger of things to come, DRS and HAFTR squared off in Varsity hockey on Wednesday night in a masterpiece. Each team needing one point to keep itself out of dangerous territory, for HAFTR, a point would earn them the division crown. For DRS, a point would keep them from the dreaded play-in 4 vs. 5 round. Each team needed a point and each team got a point as they would tie 2-2 in what would be the only deadlocked game in the entire varsity hockey league this season. Andrew Giller and Jordy Hirschfeld scored for the home team Wildcats while Gilad Kirstein knotted up the game with two second period goals for the Hawks.
